Re: North KOREA: UNDIAGNOSED CHILDREN DEATHS|_

I don't know if we can assume that diagnostic tests are being performed on these children. To complicate matters, the population is starving, enhancing adverse health effects of infectious disease. Enterovirus infection may present differently and death rates maybe higher given a starving host.

A recent CNN article about the famine:

    And from Good Friends:
News and Press Release in English on Democratic People's Republic of Korea about Food and Nutrition; published on 21 May 2008 by Good Friends

North Korea Today No. 127 May 2008
?Research Institute for North Korean Society of Good Friends, in order to bring news of the food crisis in North Korea more accurately and quickly, will increase its e-newsletter frequency to more than one issue per week. As such, the release dates might shift. Thank you for your understanding and attention to this looming crisis. We at Good Friends hope to be a bridge between the North Korean people and the world.?

People Starving to Death in Most South Hwanghae Province

In 20 cities and counties in South Hwanghae Province, with the exception of 1 or 2 places, cases of people who are dying of starvation are starting to emerge.

The lack of food supplies in farming regions is severe enough that its reputation as grain basket put to shame. South Hwanghae Province's grain harvest has been drastically reduced because of the extensive damage caused by last year's flood and because members of the military are personally watching over the supplies of rice reserved for military use.

The amount of rice that farms much reserve has increased, leading to a severe shortage of food available for farmers. One official said, 'Usually, the region with the most pressing need for food is Gangwon Province, but right now it is Hwanghae Province. This is something that has not happened before. They used to say that the area facing the most difficulties was North Hamgyeong Province but North Hamgyeong Province is doing the best.

There is still news that people in North Hamgyeong Province are starving to death, but because the food situation in other areas has become that much worse and there has been a substantial increase in the number of those who are starving to death, North Hamgyeong Province has the highest standard of living.

South Hwanghae Province was affected the least during the Arduous March, but now, it is responsible for most of the deaths that are being reported. As a result of this, the government is planning to plant potatoes nationwide. The government is hoping to restore the faith and loyalty of the people by planting potatoes, which it says grows the quickest and has the highest amount of nutrients, but the problem is that they do not have any seeds.

There is a lot of discord because without any seeds, they can't plant anything, but even if they had seed potatoes, the government would make fuss that the farmer have rebuke on the orders from the government. The official went on to say that 'there is continued unrest and resentment among the people because the government is not doing anything while it still continues to make demands like these.'

Weakened Immune Systems Cause s Sudden Deaths

Amidst the increasing numbers of people who are dying from starvation, doctors are unanimously voicing their concerns that the immune systems of the populace have become dangerously weak. Jung Gwang-hyuk, a doctor from Sariwon, worried that 'because everyone's immune system is weak, even those who are breathing right now face the immediate danger of dying.'

Sung Ryung Hyae (53), a doctor from Haeju, said 'If you look at the general case of South Hwanghae Province, there are 8 or 9 people out of 10 who are subsisting on nothing more than porridge water. The porridge itself is not properly made because of the lack of food, and even though people mix in things such as grass, the nutritional value of the porridge is quite low. As a result, people can faint or die without warning. Unlike older times when people got weaker before dying, now, there are many people who suddenly faint and die. This is the frightening consequence of a weakened immune system.'

Jang Hwa-sun (52),a physician from Wonsan, echoed this sentiment. 'The majority of the people who are dying are farmers. During the Arduous March when there was no food, people died after being bed-ridden for one of two years and did not die suddenly. However, because of the weak state of people's immune systems, even if they are able to eat, they face the risk of dying suddenly. Recently, a patient who suffered from malnutrition came to me. I gave him some maize-rice that I found with some difficulty, but he soon suffered from indigestion. Because his digestive functions were impaired, the patient suffered even though he had eaten and died shortly thereafter. I was shocked when I saw that.'

70-80% of Youth Stopping Schoolwork, South Hwanghae Province

In South Hwanghae Province, the effects of the food shortage on the education of young children are becoming evident.
According to one official in South Hwanghae Province, 'In areas where food supplies have fallen, there is a corresponding drop in the rate of school attendance among children. The rate of school attendance among children of military families in Haeju is clearly higher than other areas. In contrast, school attendance among children living in farming areas is only 20-30% while some children receive a certificate to transfer schools.' Even though children receive a transfer of school certificate, the vast majority of children do not report to their new school. Instead, they go to the mountains with their grandparents and dig up grass roots and greens to eat.

Kim Hyung Jin (12) of Bongsan-ri, Byuksung County in Hwanghae Province, said that he is comfortable not going to school. Hyung Jin's mother said that she is also more comfortable now because she does not have to deal with the many demands for items made by her child's teachers, and the fact that her children are berated in front of class when he is unable to bring the requested items. 'I feel so sorry for my child as it is because he has become so thin because of the food shortage, it's better not to send my child to school,' said the mother.

        SEOUL, June 10 (Yonhap) --

North Korea has denied rumors that avian influenza or hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is spreading in the country, a radio report said Tuesday.

The North's heath authorities notified the World Health Organization (WHO) that there has been no single case of bird flu or HFMD reported to the authorities this year, the Washington-based Radio Free Asia said.

It is a matter of taste:

either you have 2 threads on 2 different events (that is how I feel it), both in N.Korea. Or you have 1 thread on all news on bird flu in N.Korea, with a more general title.

Well. You can leave things in the place they are.

But I think the two ''epidemics'' are in fact the same ''epidemics''.

N.K. denies rumors on bird flu outbreak: report

The denial came in response to a report published a week ago by South Korean aid group Good Friends, claiming that a mysterious epidemic suspected to be bird flu or HFMD has been spreading in North Korean towns bordering China.

The disease has already taken the lives in recent months of many North Korean infants already suffering from malnutrition caused by food shortages, the group claimed, citing unnamed North Korean doctors in the border area.

The WHO has rendered technical and monetary support to North Korea to help prevent possible bird flu outbreaks since the communist state was hit by the deadly disease in 2005.

No new case has been reported since then.

Jai Narain, the director for communicable diseases at the WHO's Southeast Asia office in New Delhi, was quoted as saying that the international body is working closely with the North Korean health authorities to prevent any potential bird flu outbreak and Pyongyang has submitted related reports to the organization on a regular basis.

The France-based OIE, the world organization for animal health, also said the North's latest report to the office included no information or reports of any bird flu outbreaks, the radio reported.

North Korea has inoculated poultry against bird flu to prevent the spread of the virus from neighboring South Korea, according to the North's state-run news media.

South Korea has slaughtered over 8 million birds since early April when bird flu broke out there for the first time in more than a year. But no South Korean has died of bird flu.

HFMD, meanwhile, has struck over 10,000 people resulting in 26 fatalities, all of them children, in recent months, according to Chinese media reports.

                    From Goodfriends Blog: http://goodfriendsusa.blogspot.com/search?q=bird+flu

''(...) Fear Is Spreading Because Of an Unidentified Communicable Disease
An unidentified disease is currently spreading in the natioanl border regions, and this has the health authority (보건당국) extremely anxious.

On May 22nd in Musan, North Hamkyong Province, people began to suffer and collapse from the unidentified disease, which caused pulmonary tuberculosis, scabies(옴병), and high temperature.

This disease, which has been going by the name of high fever ('열병'), is spreading among children under the age of six, and especially quickly among children living in the day care centers(탁아소).

Because of this disease, children are unable to swallow even a grain of food and can only drink water.

Hospital staffs say children area still conscious, but their pulse is very faint.

The mortality rate for children under two years of age who contract this disease is virtually 100%.

Residents of Musan are filled with terror and are saying that "the Arduous March has finally reappeared and the same situation is happening once again." During the Arduous March, people were helpless because of long periods of no food and different diseases, and many people died.

Frustration on Diagnosing Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease or Bird Flu
Undiagnosed symptoms have spread through out the border area and the government is yet to determine whether the disease is the bird-flu. A doctor in Musan County hospital admitted by saying, ?It is the Bird-Flu, it?s spreading among the children at this stage not to adults yet. The government is trying to seek the cause for the disease?.

On the April 27, a doctor in a hospital in the city of Hoeryung stated that, ?it?s true that the Bird-Flu is spreading. Patients? symptoms are such as over 38℃ of high fever, losing appetite and coughs with dried throat and 5-6 children are dying per day. These symptoms are common among children, the doctors are saying, ?Five in every ten are dying.? Another doctor is saying that, ?I think the Bird- Flu accompanying with the SARS, we are just feeding Gimchi(김치) rather than any other medicine.

Other opinions are expressed on these symptoms that this is the Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease(HFMD;수족구병) from China. The health authority in Sinuiju has put out the sign saying? We shall put out the HFMD by enhancing the quarantine?. After the announcement that on the May 20, And a doctor in Sinuiju say that,? I would need to diagnose myself, but I think this is the foot and mouth disease. The diseases may have spread among the homeless (Kkotjebis) through North Hamgyung Province, since I?ve heard the diseases have spread from Beijing, Jangchung, Yanji and Longjing. Usual symptoms are with ulcers and high fever. This is easily contagious among children and the North Korean government is in another determination.

this is the Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease(HFMD;수족구병) from China
Two things still bother me about this - HFMD in China didn't have as high a CFR as this apparently has, and it doesn't seem like HFMD should seem take this long to dx. I think one report said these deaths started at the end of April.

Is it because it only is affecting children that people are saying HFMD? How do we know that BF won't progress this way? Family units first, then children-to-children, (then maybe young adults - documented in other pandemics), then general public??? I mean it wasn't like we had the ability to track past pandemics in the early stages. Do we really know?
