South Korea remained on alert over a further rise in highly pathogenic bird flu cases Friday as the number of highly pathogenic cases in farms approached 10 in less than two months.

The country reported yet another suspected case of highly pathogenic bird flu from Jeongeup, 222 kilometers south of Seoul, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs. The farm was raising 17,000 ducks.

Authorities were already investigating another suspected case from Jangseong, South Jeolla Province.

So far, South Korea has confirmed a total of eight seriously contagious avian influenza cases from local farms nationwide.

The latest case came from Naju, 355 kilometers southwest of Seoul, late Thursday. It was also the third case from South Jeolla Province.

"Bird flu cases traced to poultry farms will put a significant burden on society," Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said...

South Korea reported yet another case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza(AI), but this time at a slaughterhouse, not at a poultry farm as most had been.

The provincial government of South Jeolla Province said on Thursday that samples from a duck slaughterhouse in Naju tested positive for the H5N8 strain of the bird flu.

The slaughterhouse is located within ten kilometers of a poultry farm in Yeongam, which reported a case.

This marks the first case of AI reported at a slaughterhouse...

South Korea culls 19,000 ducks after highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu outbreak strikes farm
    30 Nov, 2020 17:57

Some 19,000 ducks have been culled in South Korea after a farm was hit by an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu - the same strain which has afflicted Europe in recent weeks and led to the culling of millions of birds.

The outbreak first took hold on Thursday in the southwestern town of Girin-ri, near the city of Jeongeup-si, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said in an alert on Monday.

Tracing, disinfection and a clampdown on movement are among the actions that health authorities have taken to stem the spread of disease, the OEI said.

In separate measures, the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture said it had also culled 292,000 chickens on five other farms and 100,000 ducks at another site...
