Re: Japan - Whooper Swan infected with H5N1 in Hokkaido confirmed

looking at the picture ... how would it transmit from swan to swan ?

                  Breathing,sneezing,coughing as with humans ?

water, feathers, "dabblong" as with mallards ?

cleaning the feathers or preening with the bill
even neighbour or relatives - preening ?

                  eating,drinking contaminated water/food

laying on the sand where a sick swan was before
                  lung2bill2feather2sand2feather2bill2lung

or direct contact, standing close together, feather2feather

Re: Japan - Whooper Swan infected with H5N1 in Hokkaido confirmed

It is probably excrement to ground to mouth transmission. Ducks are very dirty animals and expel a lot of loose diarrhea type stool.

Re: Japan - Whooper Swan infected with H5N1 in Hokkaido confirmed

                      swans are not ducks.

We know, it's mainly waterborne with mallards

but then it mutates away from the index(mallards)
then it becomes airborne (mammals, poultry?,swans?, gulls?)
