Kagoshima Pref. checks poultry farms after bird flu found in wild crane

      Wednesday, December 22, 2010

KAGOSHIMA, Dec. 22, 2010 (Kyodo News International) -- Experts from the Kagoshima prefectural government checked local poultry farms Wednesday, a day after detecting the highly infectious H5N1 strain of avian flu in a wild crane that died in the prefecture, one of Japan'smajor poultry production centers.

Of about 160 farms within a 10-kilometer radius of Izumi Plains, which annually sees Japan's largest winter congregation of cranes, some 50 farms have already been confirmed free of infection by a team of roughly 40 experts, officials said.

They are checking for any signs of bird flu and whether the farms have taken proper measures to prevent wild birds from entering their poultry houses, they said.

Kagoshima Prefecture was top among Japan's 47 prefectures in the production of broiler chicken in 2009 at about 50.5 billion yen, and third in eggs at 24.6 billion yen, according to data at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Of some 28 million chickens growing in the southwestern Japan prefecture, many are bred in its northwestern region where the affected plains are located, prompting the prefectural government to do its utmost to prevent the virus spreading to poultry.

''Many migratory birds come to Izumi...As avian influenza was spreading, I've been worried when it would come to this place,'' said a farmer in the area growing some 100,000 broiler chickens, adding he had been sterilizing his farm as usual since shipping all chickens last Friday.

Another farmer said she was confident her farm was safe, as she had been regularly sterilizing the property and setting up fences to prevent the entry of wild birds that might carry the flu virus. But she was worried that harmful rumors may spread and damage the local industry.

Izumi City decided to block nine roads connected to the plains in a bid to prevent the virus being carried on car tires. A municipal crane observation center, which attracts about 40,000 visitors each winter, was shut down on a temporary basis.

In the Izumi Plains, four dead cranes have tested positive in a preliminary test, and the H5N1 virus confirmed Tuesday in one of them is undergoing analysis to see if it is highly lethal or attenuated. Samples of the three other birds have been sent to Tottori University for further tests.

Izumi bird flu strain found to be highly toxic

A genetic analysis has determined that the bird flu virus detected in a crane in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, is a highly virulent strain.
The bird was among seven hooded cranes found either dead or in a weakened state earlier this month in a national reserve in Izumi City. Four of them tested positive for the bird flu virus in preliminary examinations.
Analysts at Tottori University on Tuesday found that one of the cranes had been infected with the H5N1 virus. Further analysis revealed that the strain is a highly toxic type.....

Kagoshima crane died of highly virulent H5N1

KAGOSHIMA (Kyodo) The Environment Ministry said Wednesday the highly infectious H5N1 strain of avian influenza found in a hooded crane in Izumi plain, Kagoshima Prefecture, was confirmed to be very lethal, a day after the prefectural government detected the flu in the bird's carcass.

The DNA structure of the virus was quite similar to the strains found in the droppings of a wild duck in Wakkanai, Hokkaido, in October, and in a weakened young tundra swan found at a residence in Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, in November, according to the ministry.

Earlier Wednesday, experts from the government checked local poultry farms.

Of about 160 farms within a 10-km radius of the Izumi plain, which sees the nation's largest winter congregation of cranes, some 50 have already been confirmed free of infection by a team of roughly 40 experts, officials said...

Kagoshima takes measures against bird flu

Tuesday will mark a week since an endangered crane tested positive for the bird flu virus. Cranes are wintering in Izumi Plain, in Kagoshima prefecture.
Locals are continuing efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

The highly virulent H5N1 virus was detected in a hooded crane that died in the area last Tuesday. Izumi Plain is known to be a wintering site for about 80 percent of the world's hooded cranes.....

Anti-bird flu methods to be drawn up

Japan's Environment Ministry is going to instruct municipalities across the country to closely monitor migratory birds in an effort to prevent the spread of avian flu infections.

The ministry held a meeting on Wednesday in the wake of the discovery of several flu-infected birds around the country.
At the meeting, Professor Toshihiro Ito of Tottori University described a recent study in Kagoshima Prefecture where a highly virulent bird flu virus was detected in 5 hooded cranes.
He said he found no signs of a pandemic since the situation had been leveling off in the region....
