Highly pathogenic bird flu confirmed from dead crows in Hamatombetsu Town
      March 22, 19:29

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was identified in the carcasses of three Jungle Crows found in Hamatombetsu last week. Wild birds infected with bird flu have been found one after another in Hokkaido this season, and the road is calling on people not to touch them if they find dead birds.

According to the Soya General Promotion Bureau, on the 14th of this month, seven Jungle Crows were found dead in Hamatombetsu Town, and as a result of a simple test, positive reactions to bird flu were confirmed from three birds.
After that, Hokkaido University, which received a request from the Ministry of the Environment, conducted a detailed genetic test, and found that all three birds were found to have a highly pathogenic "H5N1" avian influenza virus with a high mortality rate.
The Soya General Promotion Bureau and the Ministry of the Environment have decided to conduct an urgent investigation to see if there are any dead wild birds within a radius of 10 km from the place where the carcass was recovered. ..

14 emus among 57 birds culled at west Japan zoo after avian flu outbreak
              November 12, 2022 (Mainichi Japan)

SHIRAHAMA, Wakayama -- Fifty-seven birds including 14 emus were culled at a zoological theme park in Japan's Wakayama Prefecture after it was confirmed some ducks there had died of avian flu.

The prefectural government announced Nov. 11 that a genetic test had confirmed that the ducks that had died at the Adventure World theme park in the town of Shirahama were infected with the highly pathogenic flu virus. The same day, the prefecture and park culled 57 birds: 29 domestic ducks, 13 geese, one ostrich and 14 emus.

A zookeeper found three ducks dead in their space at around 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 10 in a zone of the park where guests can interact with animals, according to the prefectural government and other sources. Another three ducks were also later discovered dead. A PCR test by the Wakayama Prefectural Kihoku Livestock Hygiene Service Center found that the ducks were infected with the H5 avian flu virus.

Adventure World had around 850 birds in 44 species. As the culling was limited to poultry based on livestock disease law guidelines, other categories of birds including penguins and flamingos were not culled...
