Study: Travelers from China bring bird flu-infected meat into Japan

Avian flu-infected raw poultry brought into Japan by airline passengers from China has been seized over the past two years, a joint study has revealed.
As bird flu continues to spread on a global scale, the first such Japanese study was conducted on 228 samples of raw chicken and duck meat, as well as eggs, confiscated in nine airports across the nation from June 2015 through February this year.
The study, by the farm ministrys Animal Quarantine Service and Hokkaido University, found three pieces of chicken and duck meat brought from Shanghai, Xiamen and Hong Kong to Narita and Chubu airports containing highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtypes H5N1 and H5N6.

?Considering how difficult it is to find all meat products through quarantine, we believe what was found in the latest study is just the tip of the iceberg,? said Yoshihiro Sakoda, a professor of virology at the university who conducted the research.
