SIRAJGANJ, APR 8: Bird flu (Avian influenza) affected chickens are being sold secretly at different markets in nine upazilas of Sirajganj district, posing health hazard among the people. On the other hand, the poultry sector has now stood on the verge of ruins in the district caused by prevalence of the disease. Though the district Livestock department is working here with a poor manpower in a bid to make the people aware about the disease and how to be saved from the disease, their efforts are going in vain. As a result, a good number of poultry farms have already been shut down in the last few months.
District Livestock Office sources said that, at least 10,000 chickens were culled out at nine poultry farms in the district last year. This year the number has increased. But there is confusion over the statistic. Non-government calculation is saying that, the number of affected chickens will be redoubled.
Sources said that, the disease has spread in the area in an epidemic proportion this year and hundreds of chickens of different small and middle shaped poultry farms are going to die day after day. Finding no way, a section of poultry farm owners is being forced to sell the affected chickens to different hotels, restaurants, hats and bazars secretly, sources said.
