Bangladesh to receive $2 million grant for bird flu

Bangladesh will receive US$2 million from the World Bank to support the country’s efforts to minimise the risk of highly pathogenic bird flu.

An agreement was signed in Dhaka between the Bangladesh government and the International Development Association (IDA). Economic Relations Division secretary M. Aminul Islam Bhuiyan and World Bank Country Director Xian Zhu signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

The grant was made under the Avian and Human Influenza Facility programme, which is a multi-donor grant-making mechanism, administered by the World Bank. The purpose of the Facility is to minimise the risk and socio- economic impact of avian influenza and of possible human pandemic influenza in developing countries lacking adequate domestic resources and capacity to prepare for and combat any onset of the disease.
