    Pneumonia kills 8 in Kushtia

    Pneumonia killed at least eight children and attacked several hundred in Kushtia in a week.

    Those killed are Lal Chand, 3 months old, of Arkandi village in sadar upazila; Niama Khatun, 3 months old, of Chourangi in Kumarkhali; Sufia, 3 months old, of Dahakhula in sadar upazila; Sizajn, 10-days old , of Bheramara; Baby, 9 days old , Babu, 22 days old, of Mohammadpur, Asif, 4 months old and Pannu, 18 days old, of Swastipur in sadar upazila.

    Besides, at least 100 people of different ages attacked with viral fever are receiving treatment at different hospitals and upazila health complexes.

    Doctors of Kushtia general hospital said children and old aged people are mostly affected with the flu. The situation will improve when the weather will become normal, the doctors said.

    I wasn't aware of this, persay, but reports over the last 8 weeks from Bangladesh are rapidly increasing in number and severity. Two similar reports from the vicinity of this one, are below. I do not know if this is normally like this. If it was, I suppose, would they publishing these things on their newspapers' front pages?

    Diarrhoea, pneumonia claim 15 lives in a week in Thakurgaon

    An outbreak of diarrhoea and pneumonia claimed 15 lives, mostly children, in Thakurgaon district in last seven days while 500 more are suffering from the diseases.

    A heat wave sweeping across Thakurgaon is helping spread viral diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia and young children are the primary victims of these diseases, Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital sources confirmed.

    All deaths were reported by Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital who were identified as Babu, 2 days, Ashique, 3, Marium, 1 month, Alpana, 7, Ranzana, 12, Mamata, 1, Babu, 23, Baby, 2, Panna, 3, Marzina, 23, Babu, 1 day, Shameem, 2, Shafiqul, Joy and Anwar Hossain.

    All were from Baliadangi, Pirganj and Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon district.

    Eight of the victims died of pneumonia, while the rest fell prey to diarrhoea. The age of the children who died ranged from one day to twelve years.

    The sadar hospital sources added that many people of different ages are rushing to the sadar hospital every day with heat-related diseases.

    Five hundred patients, mostly infants, have been admitted so far to the hospital from four surrounding upazilas. Two hundred and fifty diarrhea-infected patients were also undergoing treatment at Baliadangi, Pirganj, Ranishankail and Haripur Health Complexes.

    Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital is having difficulty providing adequate accommodation and sufficient oxygen cylinders to the unusually high number of ailing patients, said doctor Md Shajahan Newaj over telephone.

    12 girls attacked in Magura

    A mysterious disease killed a schoolboy and attacked 12 girls at Sabdalpur High School in Sreepur upazila in Magura district.

    The 12 girls are now improving at Magura Sadar Hospital, doctors said yesterday.

    On Tuesday, 13 year-old Sujit Mandal of Malaynagar village, a student of class six, suddenly fainted in the classroom and developed breathing problem. He died in about three hours while being taken to hospital.

    Twelve girls in the school fell sick, showing the same symptoms yesterday and the day before. They were rushed to Magura Sadar Hospital. They are Rizia 13, Lima 13, Naznin 15, Mita 13, Swapna 14, Sarna 13, Shiphu 14, Lina 13, Afreen 14, Farzana 13, Kabari 14 and Lucky 14.

    School authorities and doctors in the area said all the girls developed breathing problem after being fainted. The doctors however, could not detect the cause.

    Medical Officer Amar Proshad at Magura hospital told this correspondent that although the disease could not be identified, application of sedative drugs showed good result in their treatment.

    When contacted yesterday, Magura civil surgeon said he along with Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur thana visited the school yesterday but found nothing to identify the disease.

    There has not been any fresh attack, he said yesterday afternoon.

    A temporary medical camp has been set up at the upazila headquarter under the supervision of Sreepur Upazila Health Officer Kazi Rezaul Haque, he said.

    The Director General of Health Services has been informed but an expert team is yet to be sought, the civil surgeon said.

      Our Kushtia correspondent said that nearly 6,000 poultry birds were buried on Saturday after nearly 5,000 died within a span of five days in the Kushtia Agro Hatchery and Poultry Farm at Barokhada under Sadar Upazila.
