After receiving the message, the Livestock Department with the help of the district administration culled the chickens and buried those.
Shah Ataur Rahman, general manger of Kazi Farms Limited, said they have seven poultry farms and a hatchery in the district. "But bird flue was detected at the Yakubpur Farm only."

Poultry industry facing catastrophe afresh 1.17 lakh fowls culled

      Zakir Mustafiz Milu from Thakurgaon

Bird Flu has broken out in a poultry farm of Kazi Farms Group situated at village Yakubpur under Thakurgaon sadar upazila of the district The govt has reportedly given order to cull all the fowls of the farm numbering 1.17 lakh plus 626 and also to destroy about 2.10 lakh eggs.

The first symptom of the flu was noticed when 50 fowls died on Wednesday last But the farm owner was not yet sure as to what it was. When on Thursday about 2,000 more fowls died, the authority informed the district Live Stock Officer who performed a rapid test of the sample and sent the sample to the regional testing laboratory at Jaipurhat and central Live stock laboratory at Savar, Dhaka. The confirmation reports of both the laboratories reached here on Saturday evening. After receiving the reports and by the order of the Director General of Live Stock Department, the district administration and the local Live Stock department started culling the fowls from 300 hours Friday night

The district Live Stock Officer Mosaddequr Rahman told The New Nation that the culling of the fowls would be going on till the last one is not dead. At present 200 labourers and 70 0fficials and employees are engaged in the process of culling
. Deputy Commissioner Munshi Shahabuddin Ahmed told The New Nation that the district administration and the district Live Stock department had taken immediate measures to cull the infected birds. But it was a gigantic task to cull such a huge number of fowls. He further said that all types of precautionary measures were taken so that the virus of the flu was not spread further.

Meanwhile, Kazi Zahidul Hasan, Managing Director, Kazi Farms Group said in a Press briefing on Saturday that they had also taken all possible measures to cull the fowls as soon as they became confirmed about the infection of the virus. He further said that due to the outbreak of bird flu in their Yakubpur Farm, they would be compelled to sustain a loss of Tk. 35 whereas the government would compensate about Tk one crore only. He further said that on account of the outbreak of the Bird Flue in one of their layer farms, there would be a crisis in the broiler chicks market

He also said that after the completion of the culling they would shutdown the farm for three months. In an enquiry about the type of the virus, he said that for the confirmation of the type of the virus the sample was sent to the testing laboratory in Italy.

Re: Bangladesh: New H5N1 outbreaks in poultry

        snip..
Leaders of the poultry associations welcomed the decision of increasing the capacity of the government-run hatcheries which will help to meet the shortfall in the supply of day-old chicks and thus other poultry products.
The minister said the government was presently running 12 hatcheries with the annual capacity of producing 83 lakh day-old chicks.
?We will ensure maximum utilization of the present capacity and new projects will be launched soon to set up more hatcheries so that the entrepreneurs in the poultry sector cannot increase prices by capitalizing on the recurrent shortages,? he said, adding that there was a weekly shortfall of around 20 lakh day-old chicks against the demand for 85 lakh.
The meeting was informed that owners were selling day-old chicks for Tk 60 each while an egg was selling for Tk 5 at the farmers? level.
The minister said that the poultry farm owners? allegation that the import of Indian eggs was responsible for the recent spread of bird flu in some places was not well-grounded since there were many factors, including movement of migratory birds and marketing of poultry feed without testing, which can also cause the deadly disease. Representatives of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association, Bangladesh Egg Producers Association and Breeders Association, along with others, attended the meeting.
The poultry sector?s leaders demanded introduction of insurance policy and bank loans on easy terms for maintaining the growth of the poultry sector which has been hit hard by the spread of bird flu in the last two years.

Re: Bangladesh: New H5N1 outbreaks in poultry

Thursday, March 25, 2010Star ChittagongBird flu panic grips Ctg poultry farmers
Nur Uddin AlamgirPanic caused by avian influenza has gripped the Chittagong poultry farmers again after the outbreak of bird flu was reported at Sitakunda upazila in the district.

The panic has also led to an increase in the price of chicken this season when farmers usually opt not to run the poultry business to avert loss due to the highly contagious disease bird flu.

Sources in Chittagong District Livestock Office said the outbreak of the disease of this season was reported at SM Golabaria Poultry Farm at village Golabaria in Sitakunda upazila on March 14.
Owner of the farm Mohammad Abu Bakar Siddique informed district livestock officials of the sudden death of 1,500 chickens when the latter rushed to collect sample.

It was tested at Chittagong District Veterinary Hospital Laboratory and Field Diseases Investigation Laboratory in Feni.

After getting the positive results from both the laboratories, the livestock officials culled the rest 400 chickens of the farm and declared the area as 'infected' for three months, said the livestock officials concerned, adding that the farm will not be allowed to raise chickens for the period and will remain under strict monitoring.

Rakibur Rahman Tutul, owner of Nahar Agro Complex Limited, said they are in fear of attack by bird flu that destroy the farm as well as the capital of the little investors within a short time.

A good number of poultry farmers are not running business this season that contributes to the price hike of chickens.

Per kilogram chicken of farm is being sold at Tk 140 and local chicken at Tk 240, which was Tk 100 to Tk 110 and Tk 210 to Tk 220 respectively before the outbreak of bird flu in December, he added.

General Manager Nurul Islam of MM Aga Limited said the price of chicken has been increased due to less production. The situation will improve by the April, he hoped.

Chittagong Poultry Breeders' Association President Iqbal Dada said the attack of bird flu has reduced to a significant level comparing the previous years.

?Poultry farmers are now aware enough and the livestock department is active in preventing the spread of the virus,? he said.

Iqbal Dada, also senior vice president of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association, urged the government to allow import of bird flu vaccine to save the industry as well as the investors.

Additional District Livestock Officer Dr Mohammad Farhad Hossain said though usually bird flu breaks out in the winter when temperature goes down but the virus appeared after the winter this year. He said the diseases could tackle remarkably due to awareness of the farmers and organised activities of the livestock department.

Seventeen farms were attacked by the virus in 2007 while four in 2008, three in 2009 and only one this season till now, he added.

Four bird flu suspected samples have been tested at the laboratory of Chittagong District Veterinary Hospital Laboratory and one found positive.

He said they are holding seminars on bio-security for the poultry farmers in every upazilas from December to create awareness among the farmers.

A surveillance team headed by the upazila veterinary surgeon and another team headed by upazila nirbahi officer are looking after the matter.

Besides, an additional veterinary officer for three upazilas and three health workers for each upazila are working with the financial assistance of Food and Agriculture Organisation to tackle the highly contagious disease, he added.

There are 687 layer farms, 3,359 broiler farms, 12 breeder farms and two layer breeding farms in Chittagong district, said the sources.
