No bird flu marked in Mymensingh

MYMENSINGH, Apr 4:?No bird flu was reported in Mymensingh district till date.
Experts with livestock department disclosed the fact at an opinion exchange meeting on bird flu held on Shaheb Ali Road in the town on Monday, reports BSS.
The livestock department and local poultry farmers organized the meeting. The speakers at the meeting said the entire district of Mymensingh is free from avian influenza.
The meeting was presided over by Shamsuddin Ahmed, District Livestock Officer.
Among others, professor of veterinary science, BAU Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Dr. Abdul Hye, Sadar Upazila Livestock Officer, Krisibid Babul Banik, Krisibid Toyhedul Islam, Golam Rabbani and Nazimuddin took part in the discussion.
They said the bird flu panic among the poultry farmers in the district has been reduced to a great extent as adequate measures have been taken to prevent the possible outbreak of avian influenza in the region.

600 chickens culled in Noakhali

Khagrachhari district administration fearing bird flu infection imposed a ban on the transportation of chickens, eggs and poultry feeds from bird flu-infected areas yesterday while Noakhali district administration culled 600 chickens as those were bought from bird flu-infected areas of Gazipur.
The central avian influenza control room sources said the decisions were taken by the district administration. A number of other districts including Rajshahi and Feni have also taken the similar decisions, the control room sources said.
They said no new cases of bird flu infection were detected in the last five days.
Our Noakhali correspondent reports: Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Hakim Hasan culled 600 broiler chickens in Noakhali which were bought from bird flu infected Gazipur district.
Office-in-charge of Sudharam Police Station ASM Nurul Alam said Abul Khayer and Abul Kashem of North Fakirpul bought 800 chickens from Gazipur four days ago and had already sold 200 chickens.
Police raided the farm yesterday and buried the remaining chickens.
Our Khagrachhari correspondent reports that the district administration has imposed a ban on entry of chickens, eggs and poultry feeds from Dhaka, Savar, Narayanganj and Gazipur districts where bird flu was detected.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sahadat Hossen issued a circular in this regard in the district yesterday, district administration sources said.

The circular said the bringing in of all poultry, eggs and poultry feeds from confirmed avian influenza infected areas have been prohibited to prevent bird flu infection in Khagrachhari.

The circular also said legal actions might be taken against those who fail to obey the instructions.

It was reported in newspapers that Feni police seized 66,000 eggs on Tuesday as those were brought in from Dhaka. Three wholesalers of the district brought those violating a decision taken at a meeting. The meeting had decided not to bring in poultry products from Dhaka area until further notice.

Call to create awareness, not panic, to protect poultry sector

Speakers at a meeting here on Thursday called for creating massive awareness, not panic, among all sections of the people to protect the country's poultry sector from the deadly affect of avian influenza (bird flue). They said both government and non-government organizations as well as the poultry farmers are already working together to protect this highly prospective sector from the adverse effect of bird flu. Referring to its importance in the national economy, the speakers said a large number of grassroots people are directly dependent on this vital sector that contributes enormously towards the country's development. Rajshahi District Avian Influenza Prevention and Coordination Committee arranged the meeting on "Enhancement of consciousness to prevent avian influenza (bird flue) and intensifying inter- departmental coordination" at the Deputy Commissioner's conference hall.
With DC Dr. Aminul Islam in the chair, Divisional Assistant Director of Livestock Azizul Islam, District Livestock Officer Ataur Rahman, Civil Surgeon Dr. Golam Mourtoza, General Secretary of Poultry Farm Owners Association Khandaker Farhad Hossain and Poultry Farmer Alauddin, among others, addressed the meeting.
They pleaded for a stringent measure against smuggling of chicks and eggs into Bangladesh as the bordering villages are more vulnerable to bird flu infection.

Panic grips poultry farm owners

RANGPUR, Apr 5: About 16 thousand poultry farms were panicked in greater northern region fearing the attack of Bird Flu. The poultry farms and hatchery owners in the district apprehended to loose the trade hearing the crashing news of hen at Savar and Gazipur due to attack of Bird Flu.
About 9 lakhs people were directly involved in the trade including small, medium, large farms and poultry feeds and medicinal in the region. A total of 1340 poultry farms were established in Rangpur district. Of them, 220 broiler farms, 809 layer farms, 309 chief rearing unit and one poultry hatchery.
The district administration cancelled all veterinary surgeons leave in the district and instructed them to be aware and discharge their duties cautiously.
The price of broiler and eggs in the local markets fell drastically fearing the panic during the last seven days. A broiler being sold at Tk 80-90, which was sold at Tk 100-120/- earlier. 100 eggs being sold at Tk 280 which was sold at Tk 360 earlier in the market. Gabur Ali, joint secretary of the district poultry farm owners association told that the industry in the district faced a setback and incurred a heavy loss due to the panic. He also said that there were about 16 thousands poultry farms and hatchery in the northern districts. About nine lakhs peoples were directly involved in the trade. If the situation continued, the trade would definitely be destroyed, he feared.
Though, there were no trace of Bird Flu infection in the district, the district administration took precautionary measures to combat it Khandaker Atiur Rhaman, Deputy Commissioner of the district held a meeting with farm owners, feed traders, representative of different veterinary companies and district livestock and veterinary officials. DC confirmed in the meeting that the district is still out of virus infection. The meeting expressed grave concern over the panic and feared that the virus infected broiler and hen could enter any time in the district. The DC asked the concerned officials and persons to make the people aware in this regard and take initiatives so that the infected broiler and layer could not enter in the district from Gazipur and Savar.
Meanwhile, the DC with Veterinary and Livestock officials visited different poultry farms and hatchery in the district as part of the precautionary measures to prevent the virus infection. He visited VIP Shahadat poultry and hatchery of the town, the largest poultry farm and hatchery in N region recently and examined the management, feeding and hibernation of layer of the farm and expressed satisfaction.
Alamgir Hossen, District Livestock Officer told that the district is still out of danger. The administration, however, has taken precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
Dr Syed Chowdhury, veterinary surgeon of the district expressed the similar.
