World Bank accredits Kingdom's labs as research centres

AMMAN (Petra) ? The World Bank will accredit the Kingdom's labs as avian flu research centres due to their high capabilities, a senior official said on Monday.

The remarks were made by Minister of Agriculture Akef Zu'bi during a press conference to highlight the ministry's media plan in dealing with the disease.

Zu'bi, who stressed that the Kingdom is free of bird flu, said the ministry would not hesitate to announce any detection of the disease in the Kingdom.

However, the minister pointed out that too much media attention on the disease causes panic among citizens and harms the livelihoods of poultry farmers.

Zu'bi announced Monday that the ministry had concluded a deal with Jordan Television, whereby JTV will devote40 seconds each day to matters related to farming.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is due to implement a plan to train its staff on the diagnosis of avian flu in both birds and humans, and treatment methods.

The director of Diseases Control Department at the ministry, Adel Belbeisi, said a team from the ministry plan to visit several hospitals to outline the plan and update them on the latest developments in the region.

For its part, the Public Safety Committee in the capital has intensified its inspection campaign of butcher shops and has closed several premises for violating public safety standards.
