Bird flu: 3,000 fowls culled in Meherpur

Over 3,000 poultry were culled and 1,300 eggs damaged at a poultry farm in Meherpur following detection of bird flu on Monday night, livestock officials said.

Visiting other poultry farms in the area, the officials confirmed that the infection was limited to only one farm, Sajan Poultry, till Tuesday morning. They however alerted owners of the other farms there about bird flu, our Kushtia correspondent reports.

Tapaneswar Swami, district livestock officer of Meherpur, confirmed avian influenza (H1N5) in the district as scores of fowls died at Sajan Poultry at Keshabpara area in Meherpur town over the last few days.

Owner of the farm, Aminul Islam Khokon, who is also president of District Poultry Farm Association, said that he noticed chicken dying at his farm for the first time on Saturday.
