Malaysia has reported its first case of Zika - a woman who tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus after a visit to neighbouring Singapore, where 115 people have been infected.

The 58-year-old victim had shown signs of a rash and fever one week after coming back from Singapore late last month, officials said on Thursday.

"We are carrying out control measures against aedes mosquitoes near the woman's home to prevent the spread of the virus," Subramaniam Sathasivam, the Malaysian health minister, said at a news conference.

Malaysia confirms Sabah man, 61, is country's 2nd Zika case, and 1st locally transmitted one

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK/REUTERS) - Malaysia has recorded first locally transmitted case of the Zika virus, and second case overall.

Health Ministry director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said the patient is a 61-year-old Dusun male from Taman Public Jaya Likas, Sabah.

The patient developed a fever on Aug 27 and sought medical attention for the first time at the Luyang Health Clinic on Aug 30.

The man sought further treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 the next day when he experienced worsening fever, muscle aches and diarrhoea.

The patient's blood and urine samples tested positive for Zika, but his serious clinical condition could be due to existing health afflictions and not primarily due to the Zika virus.

Malaysia expects more Zika cases as virus spreads in Southeast Asia

Malaysia is bracing for more Zika cases, officials said on Sunday, after detecting the first locally infected patient, which could further stretch a health system struggling with dengue, another mosquito-borne virus that can be fatal.

Three days ago, Malaysia reported its first Zika infection - a woman living near Kuala Lumpur who contracted the virus during a visit to Singapore.

On Saturday, Malaysian authorities said they had detected the first local infection: a 61-year-old man in the city of Kota Kinabalu, in the Malaysian part of Borneo island.

"The confirmation of the second case of Zika in Kota Kinabalu suggests that the virus is already present within our communities," Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam said.

The confirmation of the second case of Zika in Kota Kinabalu suggests that the virus is already present within our communities.This patient has not been to any other country where large number of cases had been reported. This means that this person contracted the disease locally.He has been infected by being bitten by a mosquito which was carrying the virus within our country .From where was this mosquito?

We dont have a certain answer to this.It suggests that there are other infected people in the community who are potential sources of infection.We are in the process of tracing the movement of this last patient over the last few weeks.We will intensify vector control activities in these areas. I am informed that this patient passed away a few hours ago.We are of the view that his death is not directly related to Zika. He had other premorbid conditions including heart failure and chronic renal disease which were life threatening.Any form of viraemia in such a situation could have tilted the balance and caused his demise.

In short the message is:
Zika is present in our country.
New cases will continue to emerge.
Let us intensify our war against Aedes
NO AEDES. NO DENGUE AND NO ZIKA
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL MALAYSIANS TO WAGE THE ANTI AEDES WAR.

IMR experts in race to identify Zika virus strain

Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) was determining the strain of the virus, as a virologist confirmed there had been no efforts to study Zika up until days ago.

“We are conducting the sequencing (to identify the strain) in IMR and this may take some time,” Dr Noor Hisham said.

This comes after scientists in Singapore revealed the virus in the republic likely evolved from a strain already circulating in South-east Asia, and was not imported from South America.

Universiti Malaya virologist Prof Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar said there had not been a proper study on the virus since it was first detected in Bentong, Pahang, in 1969.

“We don’t know the number of incidences of Zika here before as there was no prevalent study carried out,” Dr Sazaly said.

“There is the Asian strain which is similar to the one that caused the outbreak in Brazil as opposed to the one in South Africa.”

Malaysia confirms first case of Zika virus in pregnant woman

Malaysia has confirmed its first case of the Zika virus in a pregnant 27-year-old woman, Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam said on Wednesday.
Zika infections in pregnant women have been shown to cause microcephaly, a severe birth defect in which the head and brain are undersized, besides other brain abnormalities.
Recently, Malaysia confirmed the first imported case of Zika in a 58-year-old woman who had visited Singapore.
On Saturday, it confirmed the first case of a locally transmitted Zika infection.

No Aedes mosquitoes tested Zika positive: Health ministry

He said genomics testing by virology experts at the Virology Unit of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) on the Zika virus of five of the six cases which were positive found that it was from the ?Asian lineage?.

The genome sequence of the Zika virus for the first case in Selangor and the third case, which involved a pregnant woman in Johor, resembles French Polynesia, like in Singapore, he added.

As for the genome sequence for the second case in Sabah and the fifth case from Miri, Sarawak, and the sixth, from Kuala Lumpur, involving siblings, he said, it resembled local genome sequence (Micronesia). -BERNAMA

60-year-old woman confirmed as eighth Zika case

KUALA LUMPUR: Another Zika infection case has been detected involving a 60-year-old woman in Sabah, making it a total of eight cases reported nationwide.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said it is the second case reported in Sabah.

The first case was a 61-year-old man who died of a heart complication.

?The female patient?s urine and blood test results which was conducted by the Medical Research Institute showed a positive Zika virus infection,? he said in a statement today.

He said on Sept 24, the patient from Kota Kinabalu had rashes and was treated at a private hospital on Sept 25...

Malaysia confirms its 8th Zika virus case

Malaysia confirmed its eighth Zika virus case on Sunday after a 67-year-old man, who first showed symptoms in late November, got diagnosed with the virus. However, a statement from the health ministry did not specify if the patient from the state of Selangor contracted the case locally or overseas.
According to the online statement, the man was in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 14 to 28. It further added that he was present in the Selangor city of Shah Alam and in Perak state, north of Selangor.
"His family members were questioned and their blood and urine samples were taken as soon as he (the patient) tested positive for Zika," Health Ministry's director general, Noor Hisham Abdullah told Reuters.
