Fugitive Nigerian Monkeypox carrier arrested by police in Phnom Penh
Khmer Times
A fugitive Nigerian man, who was detected with Monkeypox in Thailand – and then fled medical care, has been arrested in Phnom Penh this evening after fleeing across the border to Cambodia.
Police arrested the man on July 23, 2022 around Doeum Thkov market, Chamkarmon district, Phnom Penh.
The news was confirmed a few minutes ago by Keut Chhe, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh.
After his arrest, the Nigerian – provisionally identified as Osmond Chihazirim Nzerem, a 27-year-old Nigerian man – was handed over to the Ministry of Health for further action.
Earlier today, there had been reports of sightings in Sihanoukville from Kouch Chamroeun, Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, who said that he had received information that the man had fled to Preah Sihanouk Province and has ordered police to urgently investigate the case.
Oum Rath, Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, has also issued an urgent order to all local authorities in his province bordering Thailand to search for men resembling the man, after information was received that he may have fled Thailand after being diagnosed and come to Cambodia.
More unconfirmed reports speculated that the Nigerian tried to cross the border from Thailand into Cambodia through the border of Koh Kong province.
However, it now appears that the man had instead made his way to the capital, Phnom Penh – which has a large Nigerian expat community.
This marks Cambodia’s first Monkeypox case and officials will now be conducting an urgent trace enquiry to find out where the man as been – and who he has had contact with...
