Thailand’s first monkeypox patient found after fleeing to Cambodia

    01:25 PM July 24, 2022

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia—A Nigerian man who went on the run after becoming Thailand’s first monkeypox case was found in Phnom Penh Saturday and taken to hospital, the Cambodian Health Ministry said.

The 27-year-old tourist — who had overstayed his visa in Thailand — was diagnosed with monkeypox in the resort city of Phuket on Monday, a Thai health official said.

During his stay in Phuket, the man had visited two entertainment venues, and 142 people are now being screened for the virus, a health official said, adding that the man also had unprotected sex with a woman.

After learning of his diagnosis, he fled his Phuket accommodation, turned off his phone and failed to respond to police or health workers’ messages.

His getaway sparked a manhunt across Thailand and authorities said Saturday his phone signal was detected in a northeastern province bordering Cambodia.

After searching several locations Saturday, Cambodian police found the runaway at a Phnom Penh guest house and he has since been sent to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital for medical treatment.

“In order to prevent the infection of monkeypox virus, the Ministry of Health appeals to all people who have direct contact with the Nigerian patient to isolate themselves and seek health checks,” the Cambodian ministry said in a statement.

Thai woman from Dubai confirmed as 5th monkeypox case in Thailand

A Thai woman returning from Dubai on Sunday became the fifth confirmed monkeypox patient in Thailand, the Disease Control Department (DCD) chief said on Monday.

Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the DCD, said the 25-year-old woman was infected in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and she had symptoms before she took a flight back to Thailand so it was easy to detect her condition.

Opas said disease-monitoring officials at Suvarnabhumi Airport spotted the woman with apparent illness and they questioned her and noticed her blisters so they checked her background.

Opas said the woman provided full cooperation to the authorities and she was taken to a hospital before a subsequent lab test confirmed she was infected with monkeypox.

According to health officials, the number of Monkeypox cases in Thailand increased last month, and males who have sex with one another should take measures because new cases are spreading among them.

Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, stated on Sunday that 91 instances of Monkeypox have been registered since the country’s first occurrence in July last year.

“Last month alone, there were as many as 48 new cases, which is about 2.3 times the 21 new cases in May,” he said.

The 48 new cases were all men who had intercourse with men, and 22 of them, or 45.8%, had HIV infection records, according to the director-general.

There are 41 Thais and seven foreigners among the 48 new cases. Thirty-eight dwell in Bangkok, three in Samut Prakan, two in Chon Buri and Nonthaburi, and one in Pathum Thani, Phuket, and Samut Sakhon.

According to Dr Tares, the majority of new cases had sex without protection or with strangers before becoming unwell. There were no serious symptoms or deaths among the individuals...

General director of the Disease Control Department, Dr. Tares Krassanairawiwong, said the patient, already infected with HIV and syphilis, was diagnosed with mpox three weeks ago, Thai Public Broadcasting Service reported.

The doctors who took care of the 34-year-old patient discovered that he was also grappling with infections in his lungs and brain.

Blood examinations revealed an elevated level of white blood cells, a sign of a severe immune response, leading medical professionals to provide antibiotics and antiviral medication for mpox.

The individual died last Friday, Dr. Krassanairawiwong said.
