Nine zebras have died of an infectious disease at Gazipur’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in the past three weeks.
Four of them had fought among themselves before they died, said former Chief Veterinary Officer and specialist Dr ABM Shahidullah in a media call on Tuesday.
Authorities say the zebras died within 20 to 25 minutes after experiencing a sudden rise in their body temperature and breathing difficulties.

The laboratories had identified some bacteria, coronary issues and the presence of pesticides in the food, said Assistant Forest Conservator Tabibur Rahman, who is in-charge of the safari park.
Some also reported the zebras had Covid-19. “However, reports from the International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) said the animals were not infected with the coronavirus,” he said.

Emergency meeting to be held today in this regard
As many as nine zebras, born inside the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur, have mysteriously died in the past three weeks.
According to sources, the zebras died within the span of just 20 days. The exact cause of their deaths is yet to be ascertained.
On 2 January, the dead bodies of six zebras were found lying on the park premises. More three died by Monday.

"Their autopsy reports and samples were sent to various laboratories, including Bangladesh Agricultural University and Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), to get to the bottom of this.
"Some of the test results have already arrived," Jahidul Kabir said but did not disclose the findings.
An employee of the park, seeking anonymity, said they were instructed not to disclose the matter to anyone following the development.
