Exclusive: China sent team including medical experts to advise on North Korea’s Kim, sources say

BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - China has dispatched a team to North Korea including medical experts to advise on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to three people familiar with the situation.

The trip by the Chinese doctors and officials comes amid conflicting reports about the health of the North Korean leader. Reuters was unable to immediately determine what the trip by the Chinese team signaled in terms of Kim’s health.

A delegation led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Liaison Department left Beijing for North Korea on Thursday, two of the people said. The department is the main Chinese body dealing with neighbouring North Korea.

The sources declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter.

The Liaison Department could not be reached by Reuters for comment late on Friday. China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment late on Friday.

Daily NK, a Seoul-based website, reported earlier this week that Kim was recovering after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure on April 12. It cited one unnamed source in North Korea....https://www.reuters.com/article/us-n...263DW?rpc=401&

Defense chief says N. Korean military plane activities on 'unusual' rise

      13:32 April 24, 2020

SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has shown an "unusual increase" in inspecting its artillery's readiness and carrying out air force flight operations, heightening tensions in the region, Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo said Friday.

The South Korean defense chief made the remark in a congratulatory message for a commissioning ceremony of medical and veterinary officers, noting that the North has been concentrating on its weapons development while remaining unresponsive to offers for talks.

"North Korea ... has been heightening military tensions through an unusual increase in the inspection activities for its combat readiness posture, mostly of its artillery, and in its air force planes' flight operations," he said....

SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- North Korean media outlets have stayed mum on leader Kim Jong-un's whereabouts without putting out any reports on his public activity amid persisting speculation over his health.

Speculation about Kim's health problems spiked after CNN reported earlier this week, citing a U.S. official, that Washington is looking into intelligence that Kim is in "grave danger" after a surgery.

North Korea's state media have recently put out reports on Kim sending diplomatic letters and conveying gifts to honored citizens but stopped short of providing reports or photos featuring his public activity.

On Wednesday, state media said Kim had sent another message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, expressing gratitude for congratulating him on the anniversary of his late grandfather and national founder Kim Il-sung's birthday.

No reports, however, on the leader's "field guidance" trips or photos on his public activities have been released by state media for nearly two weeks.

Kim was last seen in state media on April 11 presiding over a political bureau meeting of the ruling Workers' Party, calling for strict measures against the coronavirus.

Kim Jong Un seen to be walking around in Wonsan, says U.S. official
            Updated April. 25, 2020 10:23
It has been reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un who has recently become subject to rumors about his health moved to Wonsan to avoid COVID-19. The U.S. authorities captured Kim walking on his own.

“It has been identified that Kim Jong Un had been staying in Wonsan during the entire last week,” said a U.S. government official. “He was seen to be walking on his own between April 15 and 20.” It has been reported that the movements of Kim’s cars and close associates were also witnessed and Kim was walking on his own without help from others or being in a wheelchair. The U.S. authorities seem to have identified such information based on the analysis of radars and images captured by reconnaissance planes.

“As some of Kim’s aids and high-ranking officials have contracted COVID-19, Kim seems to have left Pyongyang, which has a high population density, as a preventive measure,” ...http://www.donga.com/en/List/article...s-U-S-official

Japanese media reports N. Korea's Kim Jong Un in vegetative state

Shukan Gendai claims individual from dictator's Chinese medical team divulged information

                  2020/04/25 12:38

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Japanese media, citing the medical team treating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, say the failure of initial surgery has left the 36-year-old in a vegetative state.

Amid conflicting reports about Kim's health, Japanese weekly magazine Shukan Gendai reported on Friday (April 24) that a Chinese medical team member on the mission to North Korea briefly explained the situation to its senior writer, Kondm Daisuke.

The medical expert said during a visit to the countryside earlier this month, Kim clutched his chest and fell to the ground. A doctor accompanying Kim immediately carried out CPR and took him to a nearby hospital for emergency care.

                    N. KOREA DICTATORKIM JONG-UN REPORTEDLY DEAD ...After Botched Heart Surgery

North Korea's Supreme Leader/dictator Kim Jong-un has reportedly died, or is on his death bed with no hope for recuperation -- according to media outlets in China and Japan.
Amid reports China has sent a medical team to their communist neighbors this week to check in/advise on Kim, a Hong Kong-backed news channel's vice director -- who's apparently the niece of a Chinese foreign minister -- blasted out the news herself ... he's dead.

The woman put the report on a social media app called Weibo for her nearly 15 million followers to read, citing a "very solid source" about the claim Kim had, in fact, perished. A Japanese magazine reports he's in a "vegetative state" after a heart surgery gone wrong.

The outlet reports -- citing a Chinese medical expert privy to the situation -- that Kim had clutched his chest in early April and fell down while visiting the countryside there. He needed a stent procedure done, but apparently ... it either wasn't done rapidly enough, or it was botched completely by the surgeon -- with some reports saying he had shaky hands...https://www.tmz.com/2020/04/25/north...rgery-reports/

After a video claiming North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has died began circulating in the area of North Korea bordering China, North Korean authorities are intensifying efforts to identify how the video entered the country, Daily NK has learned.

“The video in question looks like it was broadcast by Korean Central Television [KCTV] and entered the country through China,” a North Pyongan Province-based source told Daily NK on Monday. “The video claims that Kim suddenly died during on-the-spot guidance [on-the-spot inspections].”

                      A “BEWILDERING” VIDEO

The video, which is around five minutes long, shows the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in the background while a caption states that “Our Beloved Supreme Leader Comrade Kim Jong Un passed away during on-the-spot guidance.” The video claims that Kim Jong Un died during a guided field trip on Saturday (Apr. 25) at 12:30 AM, and that his sister Kim Yo Jong, the first deputy director of the North Korean communist party’s Propaganda and Agitation Department, would be succeeding him.

The video also included scenes from a past ceremony commemorating Kim Jong Il’s death along with the image of a non-existent article from the “The People’s Korea” – a pro-North Korean newspaper in Japan.

Daily NK sources reported that the video, despite its lack of authenticity, is spreading quickly in North Korea.

                      • North Korea Extends COVID-19 National Emergency to End of Year

                        2020-04-28

North Korea has extended its COVID-19 national emergency to the end of the year in anticipation that the global pandemic will continue, raising concerns among residents that keeping the border with China closed will deal a serious blow to the economy.

“On the 23rd, the Central Party ordered the provincial quarantine command to extend the national emergency quarantine posture through the end of the year,” a senior official in North Pyongan province, who requested anonymity due to fear of reprisal, told RFA’s Korean Service on April 26.

“[They] ordered stronger quarantine measures in response to the prolonged outbreak,” the source said.

The source said that the order was part of follow-up measures after the Politburo of the party convened to discuss the global pandemic April 11.

“The national emergency quarantine posture for the coronavirus has been designated again as a matter of grave concern for the country,” the source said.

“As a result, the resumption of border trade and maritime trade, which has been blocked for months, has been postponed without any promise [of reopening],” the source said.....https://www.rfa.org/english/news/kor...020184222.html

                          ON APRIL 30, 20209:01
Taiwan’s intelligence chief said Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is “sick” — and his country has emergency plans for a potential power struggle if he dies, according to reports.
Chiu Kuo-cheng, the director of the National Security Bureau (NSB), gave a vague health description when pressed at a government hearing about rumors of Kim’s possible death, according to Taiwan News.

....“My answer is from the intelligence that is available and it is not an opinion,” Chiu told lawmakers, according to the Taipei Times....

                          • Splendid Isolation: North Korea and COVID-19

                            April 30, 2020

While the world contends with over two million people afflicted by the COVID-19 virus, North Korea appears to live in splendid isolation from the virus. The regime claims that it has no confirmed cases and has....

                            .....
CSIS created a unique dataset chronicling actions taken by North Korea in response to the last two major pandemics, Ebola (2014) and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (2015). We then compared these findings with NK Pro’s study of North Korea's behavior during COVID-19.
                            Key Points
                            • Splendid isolation: North Korean leaders claimed they have not confirmed any cases of COVID-19, but they made the same negative claims regarding Ebola and MERS.
                            • Suspend movement: Despite the alleged absence of cases, in all three cases North Korea restricted internal movements.
                            • Pivot to assistance: Despite claiming it had no cases, North Korea requested assistance with medical equipment from South Korea through Kaesong during the Ebola and MERS crises. Because Kaesong is closed now, North Korea has made similar requests of the United Nations.
                            • Cancelled sporting events: In all three cases, North Korea cancelled major international sporting events, presumably to reduce the chances of importing the virus.
                            • Stricter border customs: In all three cases, North Korea has tightened customs procedures.
                            • While the commonalities in the DPRK response to past pandemics does not provide us definitive insights into the current COVID-19 situation, it does tell us that North Korea appears to have a "playbook” when it comes to health pandemics. ....https://www.csis.org/analysis/splend...a-and-covid-19
