Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un Visits State Emergency Epidemic Prevention Headquarters

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, visited the state emergency epidemic prevention headquarters on May 12.

He was accompanied by Jo Yong Won and Pak Jong Chon, members of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee.

He was greeted by officials of the headquarters on the spot.

Making rounds of the command rooms of the headquarters, he examined the epidemic prevention situation one day after the state epidemic prevention work was switched over to the maximum emergency epidemic prevention system to cope with the prevailing epidemic prevention crisis, and learned about the nationwide spread of COVID-19.

A fever whose cause couldn't be identified explosively spread nationwide from late April and more than 350 000 people got fever in a short span of time and at least 162 200 out of them were healed completely. On May 12 alone, some 18 000 persons with fever occurred nationwide and as of now up to 187 800 people are being isolated and treated. Six persons died (one of them tested positive for the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron.)

SEOUL: North Korea on Saturday (May 14) reported 21 additional deaths from "fever", two days after the country announced its first-ever cases of COVID-19 and ordered nationwide lockdowns.

State media said that 174,440 new fever cases were discovered on Friday alone and that 21 people had died, as it moved into a "maximum emergency quarantine system" in a bid to slow the spread of disease through its unvaccinated population.

"On May 13, 174,440 new cases of fever were reported nationwide, 81,430 recovered, and 21 died," the KCNA report said.

The KCNA report did not specify whether the victims were positive for COVID-19, but experts say that the country lacks mass testing capacity.

"The total number of sick people nationwide was 524,440, of which 234,630 were fully recovered, 288,810 were receiving treatment, and the number of deaths so far is 27," it added...

                    SEOUL, South Korea -

North Korea has confirmed 15 more deaths and hundreds of thousands of additional patients with fevers as it mobilizes more than a million health and other workers to try to suppress the country's first COVID-19 outbreak, state media reported Sunday.

After maintaining a widely disputed claim that it's been coronavirus-free for more than two years, North Korea announced Thursday that it had found its first COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began.

It said a fever has spread across the country "explosively" since late April but hasn't disclosed exactly how many COVID-19 cases were found. Some experts say North Korea lacks the diagnostic kits needed to test a large number of suspected COVID-19 patients.

The additional deaths reported Sunday took the country's reported fever-related fatalities to 42. The official Korean Central News Agency also reported that another 296,180 people with fevers had been tallied, taking the reported total to 820,620.

The outbreak has triggered concern about a humanitarian crisis in North Korea because most of the country's 26 million people are believed to be unvaccinated against the coronavirus and its public health care system has been in shambles for decades. Some experts say North Korea might suffer huge fatalities if it doesn't immediately receive outside shipments of vaccines, medicines and other medical supplies...

North Korea, overwhelmed by the first cases of Covid-19, mobilizes the army

Leader Kim Jong-un has personally taken charge of the management of the crisis, but vilifies the North Korean health authorities for their lack of preparation.

                        Le Monde with AFP
                        Posted today at 6:33 a.m., updated at 11:01 a.m.

Two years out of step with much of the world, North Korea is finally facing an inevitable explosion in the number of Covid-19 cases. The leader, Kim Jong-un, lambasted his country's health authorities on Monday (May 16) for their handling of the epidemic, which has claimed at least 50 lives since its official appearance in the country, and ordered the army to mobilize.

In a sign of the seriousness of the situation, the North Korean leader "strongly criticized the government and the public health sector for their irresponsible attitude" , reported the state news agency KCNA. During a Politburo meeting, he complained in particular about the fact that pharmacies were not open 24 hours a day. Drug supply officials "did not roll up their sleeves and properly assess the current crisis" , he lamented, according to KCNA.

He ordered the army to get to work "to immediately stabilize the supply of medicines in Pyongyang" , where the first cases of Covid-19 in North Korea were officially detected last week. Kim Jong-un has taken personal control of the fight against the epidemic, which, according to him, is causing "great upheavals" in the country, whose population is not vaccinated.

                        Large-scale containments

The leader oversees near-daily emergency Politburo meetings, and North Korean media released photos of him visiting a pharmacy in Pyongyang on Sunday. Despite large-scale confinements, 1,213,550 people have been infected, 50 have died and 564,860 are under medical treatment, according to KCNA, which does not expressly cite Covid-19, but speaks of “fever” .
The North Korean health system was ranked 193rd out of 195 countries by a study by the American Johns-Hopkins University last year. The country's hospitals are poorly equipped, with few intensive care units. According to experts, the country has no treatment for Covid-19 and does not have the capacity to massively test its population.

North Korea has cut itself off from the world for more than two years to protect itself from the pandemic. But experts considered it inevitable that the virus would eventually infiltrate the country, given the epidemic outbreaks due to the Omicron variant in neighboring countries.

The fact that Kim Jong-un publicly vilifies his own government reflects the "sense of crisis" that has gripped the regime, said Yang Moo-jin, professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. "He puts his finger on the general inadequacy of the quarantine system ," says this analyst.

                        A “zero Covid” strategy

According to KCNA, the North Korean leader has expressed his intention to draw inspiration from China's strategy to fight the pandemic. China is one of the last countries in the world to practice a “zero Covid” policy, consisting of confining entire cities as soon as the slightest case appears, and systematically tracing and isolating the sick.

US President Joe Biden is expected in Seoul this weekend to meet his new South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-yeol. Pyongyang's weapons programs and the Covid-19 outbreak will likely top the agenda at this summit.

Despite the health crisis, new satellite images indicate that North Korea has resumed the construction of a nuclear reactor long interrupted. Washington and Seoul suspect Pyongyang of preparing a nuclear test, which would be the seventh in its history and the first since 2017.

In this context, accepting South Korea's aid against Covid-19 would hurt the ego of the North Korean regime and force it to refrain from carrying out this nuclear test, explains Cheong Seong-jang, researcher at the Sejong Institute. "If Kim Jong-un is determined to carry out a test, he will not accept help from South Korea," he said.

Le dirigeant Kim Jong-un a personnellement pris en main la gestion de la crise, mais vilipende les autorités sanitaires nord-coréennes pour leur impréparation.
"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
                        -Nelson Mandela
