SEOUL - South Korea reported Wednesday that its daily coronavirus case count surpassed 5,000 for the first time, with concerns growing over the Omicron virus variant that is suspected to have already arrived in the country.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said 5,123 COVID-19 infection cases were newly detected on Tuesday, surpassing the previous high of 4,115 recorded on Nov. 23. The number of critically ill patients has reached a record 723.
The government is on high alert over the Omicron variant that has heightened concern globally after the first suspected cases were reported Tuesday. The results of further tests on the cases will be known later Wednesday, according to health authorities...
