Bangladesh sees alarming rise in deaths with Covid-like symptoms
      Najifa Farhat
      Published at 04:14 pm July 15th, 2021

Official count only includes confirmed deaths, but experts say it’s important to keep track of it to get an actual picture of the pandemic

Bangladesh is experiencing the worst bout of the pandemic now, logging more than 200 deaths almost every day over the last nine days.

However, the daily count leaves out the people who die with coronavirus symptoms, which has jumped alarmingly in recent weeks.

Public health experts say keeping track of deaths from symptoms is important to get the real picture and to prepare for a pandemic in future.

In the 24 hours to Wednesday, the Covid unit at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) counted 25 deaths.

Of them, only seven tested positive while 14 died with symptoms and another four died after recovering from Covid-19.

When asked about the higher number of deaths with symptoms, RMCH Brig Gen Shamim Yazdani says that most patients are hospitalized after 10 to 12 days of getting infected.

“By then, the virus is not that active and the tests come back negative. So, they are counted as patients who died with symptoms,” he told Dhaka Tribune.

Almost all the virus hotspots are now recording a higher number of deaths from “Covid symptoms” than fatalities from confirmed cases.

The daily count from districts like Khulna, Satkhira, Jessore and Chittagong showed a similar trend.

In southwestern Satkhira, 440 people have died with Covid symptoms while deaths from confirmed cases standing at 79 since the pandemic began.

The Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal reported 234 fatalities from Covid and the number of deaths from symptoms is 634.

People dying with symptoms have been a major concern for healthcare officials and experts since the second wave of infections, induced by the Delta variant, has hit the country...

Bangladesh lifts lockdown to celebrate, exasperating experts
By: Julhas Alam, The Associated Press

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Waiting among hundreds of fellow travelers to catch a ferry out of Bangladesh's capital, unemployed construction worker Mohammed Nijam knew he was risking catching the coronavirus, but he felt it was even riskier to stay in Dhaka with another lockdown looming.

“I have to pay rent every month even though I have no work,” he said, adding that his landlord had been bothering him for money even as he was struggling just to feed himself. "I'd rather go to my village home and lead life as God lets me.”

Nijam is among the tens of millions of Bangladeshis shopping and traveling this week during a controversial eight-day pause in the country's strict coronavirus lockdown that the government is allowing for the Islamic festival Eid al-Adha. The suspension has been panned by health experts who warn it could exacerbate an ongoing surge fueled by the highly contagious delta variant, which was first detected in neighboring India.

“Already there is a scarcity of beds, ICUs, while our health care providers are exhausted," said said Be-Nazir Ahmed, a public health expert and former chief of the government’s Health Directorate. "So if the situation worsens and more patients come to hospitals, it will be near impossible to deal with the crisis.”

With the spread of the virus rampant, most everything in Bangladesh was ordered shut on July 1, from markets to mass transportation. Soldiers and border guards patrolled the streets and thousands were arrested and sent to jail for violating the lockdown.

Yet even with the new restrictions, virus deaths still hovered around 200 each day and daily infections were still around 11,000, both thought to be undercounts. On Sunday, 225 deaths and 11,758 infections were reported.

Despite the warnings from experts — and with just over 4 million of the country’s 160 million people fully vaccinated — the government announced that from July 15-23, all restrictions would be lifted and everything would be reopened so people could celebrate the festival, which is normally a boon to the economy...

Bangladesh is set to reimpose the ‘strict lockdown’ from 6 a.m. on Friday, 23 July, after a 8 day relaxation given from 15 July to 22 July in view of the festival of Eid-Ul-Azha.

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain told media on Thursday that this time the lockdown will be stricter than before. Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and military will be deployed in the country for the enforcement of the restrictions, said the Minister.

The government has decided to close all offices and factories, including the exported oriented industries and Ready Made Garment Factories (RMG) this time unlike the last lockdown when factories and RMG industries were allowed to operate.

Public Transport including road, railways, waterways and the domestic flights will remain suspended during this period. However, cargo operations and emergency services like hospitals and medical work will not be covered under the restrictions...

....The Directorate General of Health Services reported 187 deaths and 3697 new cases of corona infection on Thursday.

Covid patients suffocate due to ICU crisis in Bangladesh
                Emran Hossain | Published: 23:33, Aug 04,2021 | Updated: 23:39, Aug 04,2021

The number of people watching their critically-ill family members with Covid-19 gasp for breath for days and then suffocate is growing as the supply of hi-flow oxygen stays limited to only a handful of healthcare facilities — only the ones with intensive care units.

Hi-flow oxygen is mainly accessible at the intensive care facility available in only a handful of hospitals, particularly to 1,326 beds, according to an official account.

Almost all ICU beds are filled up and a bed only becomes available after the death or recovery of its occupant but people get access to the available beds only through strong lobbying.

Bangladesh has recorded about 30 per cent test positivity for over a month with over 1.5 lakh active cases, about 12,000 of them identified critical in official account, currently in hand...
