SEOUL -- South Korea's rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations to people aged 55-59 has stuttered to a week-long halt after a record high number of new cases sparked a rush for shots, exhausting available supplies and crashing an official reservation website.

The halt in vaccination appointments for people in the upper 50s age bracket came late on Monday, the first day that inoculation bookings were opened to under-60s. Daily infections had risen to 1,440 by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, the country's highest daily tally of the pandemic and an eighth straight day of more than 1,000 cases, Yonhap news agency reported.

While South Korea is ahead of its schedule in vaccination targets, the pace has slowed sharply in recent weeks to around 30,000 doses a day from a peak of 850,000 earlier, as it finalizes shipment schedules to begin Moderna COVID-19 inoculations for people in their 50s.

"Due to strong demand, 1.85 million Moderna doses were fully booked and reservations for those who couldn't sign up will resume on July 19," the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said in a statement. A total of around 3.52 million people in the 55-59 age group were eligible to sign up, leaving 1.67 million still to reserve shots.

Just about 11.6% of the country's 52 million population has completed vaccination, including receiving both shots for products requiring two doses, while 30.4% have received one dose, according to government data.

South Korean authorities have announced tighter coronavirus curbs in regions outside the capital, Seoul, as daily infections hit a new record and the country battles its worst-ever outbreak, spurred by the highly contagious Delta variant.

Seoul and its neighbouring areas are already under the toughest Level 4 restrictions, which include a ban on gatherings of more than two people after 6pm. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said the government would now tighten rules across most of the country, with the exception of some southern regions, to Level 2 on the four-level scale.

Under the new restrictions, set to come into effect on Thursday, gatherings of more than eight people are banned, and restaurants and bars must close by midnight.

Kim told an intra-agency COVID-19 meeting that the decision was reached as the number of “newly confirmed patients outside of the capital area was also on the rise”. While most of South Korea’s cases were still being recorded in and around the capital, the “average numbers of new cases from regions outside the Seoul metropolitan area have more than doubled from last week”, Kim said. He added that further curbs would be enforced in some high-risk areas.

SEOUL — South Korea reported 1,600 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a slight drop from the record number the previous day, as it battles to contain an outbreak on board a military anti-piracy vessel operating overseas.

The country tightened social distancing rules across most of the country on Wednesday, when it reported a record number of 1,615 infections, to tackle its worst-ever outbreak of coronavirus.

Outbreaks had previously been largely centered in the capital Seoul and neighboring areas, but cases have spread to non-metropolitan areas, adding to worries about the highly contagious Delta variant and a slowing vaccine rollout.

There has yet to be a significant increase in hospitalisations or deaths, with a mortality rate of 1.18% and the number of severe cases at 167 as of Wednesday, far below levels seen during the previous peak in late December...

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — South Korean health officials reported 2,223 coronavirus cases Wednesday, a new daily record reached despite aggressive measures to contain the spread.

That’s up from 1,540 infections on the previous day, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Seoul continued to report a higher number of cases than any other city in the country with 661 new infections on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, U.S. Forces Korea — responsible for roughly 28,500 American troops in the peninsula — announced that 22 service members tested positive for COVID-19 between July 13 and Aug. 8. About half of those troops were recently flown into the country.

The August surge of new infections prompted South Korea’s government to expedite the vaccine rollout, which has lagged for months due to limited supplies. The KDCA reported 42% of the country’s 51 million people have received a first dose, and nearly 16% have been fully inoculated...

South Korea's daily new coronavirus cases hovered under 1,900 for the second day Friday, while the number of critical patients continued to rise, as health authorities stepped up vaccination campaigns to control the worst wave driven by the highly infectious delta variant.

The country added 1,841 more COVID-19 cases, including 1,811 local infections, raising the total caseload to 245,158, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

Friday's tally compares with 1,882 on Thursday, 2,155 on Wednesday, 1,509 on Tuesday and 1,418 on Monday. Daily cases have stayed above 1,000 for 52 days in a row.

The country added 8 more deaths from COVID-19, raising the death toll to 2,265, the KDCA said.

With the highly contagious delta variant sweeping the nation, the number of patients with serious symptoms across the country reached 427 and hovered above 400 for a fourth consecutive day.

Critical patients more than tripled from some 120 in early July, when the fourth wave began...
