Thailand logged a record 312 new Covid-19 fatalities -- substantially more than the previous high of 239 -- and 20,515 new cases over the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Wednesday morning.

During the 24-hour period, 22,682 Covid-19 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals

An official said later that 100 of the deaths actually occurred previously.

Dr Chawetsan Namwat, emergency health hazard and disease control director at the Department of Disease Control, said that the 312 new fatalities included 100 previously unconfirmed deaths that had occurred earlier this month and before.

The number of people who died of Covid-19 on Tuesday alone was actually 212, he said.

Apisamai Srirangson, assistant spokesperson for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said in the afternoon briefing that the 312 fatalities ranged from 28-102 years old...

Thailand Braces for New Covid Clusters as Delta Spreads Wider
    Randy Thanthong-Knight, Bloomberg News
    7h ago

(Bloomberg) -- Thailand is bracing for the emergence of new Covid clusters as the highly infectious delta variant rips through more regions outside of its current epicenter of Bangkok metropolitan region.

About 60% of Thailand’s new coronavirus cases in recent days have been reported from outside the capital region, with low vaccination rates and looser movement curbs, official data showed. The country’s rate of new infections per million population at nearly 300 now dwarfs that of Indonesia or India, with a new daily record 21,379 cases reported on Friday.

The rapid spread of delta may force the government to extend and expand the crippling Covid containment measures that already cover 40% of Thailand’s population and three quarters of the economy. The worsening outbreak may also scuttle plans to reopen borders to fully vaccinated tourists from mid-October and jump-start the tourism reliant economy that’s seen its currency tumble to a three-year low.

Over the past several weeks, delta variant cases have surged in nearly all provinces in Thailand, with nearly 80% of new infections nationwide now caused by the strain first detected in India. While Covid restrictions may not result in a rapid decline in infections, they will help slow the spread and reduce pressure on the health system as the pandemic is likely to ease only from September or October, Thai health officials have said.

Authorities mounted an aggressive vaccination drive in the capital region to quell the outbreak along with lockdown-like restrictions. While nearly 70% of residents in Bangkok have received their first shot, only about 21% of the population nationwide have got their first jabs, Health Ministry data showed...

Thailand reports daily record of more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases
    4 Aug 2021

Thailand has reported 20,200 new coronavirus cases and 188 additional deaths – both records since the start of the pandemic last year – increasing the likelihood that virus-related restrictions will be extended.

The new cases and fatalities reported on Wednesday brought total cases to 672,385 and deaths to 5,503, data from the health ministry’s website showed.

The country recorded its previous high of daily COVID-19 cases at 18,912 and record-high daily fatalities at 178 just last Saturday.

A day later, the government tightened containment measures in the capital of Bangkok and several high-risk provinces, with the rules likely to remain in place until the end of August in a bid to slow an outbreak fuelled by the highly transmissible Delta and Alpha variants.

The restrictions, which took effect on Tuesday, include curbs on travel, mall closures and curfews covering 29 provinces classified as “dark red zones”.

The move will be reviewed on August 18.

Apisamai Srirangsan, a spokeswoman for the government’s COVID-19 task force, has said that if the situation does not improve, the “curbs will be extended to August 31”.

She noted that the number of infections in the provinces was now higher than in Bangkok, so containment measures had to be tightened to curb the spread...

Deaths reach tsunami proportions in Thai COVID surge
    By Juarawee Kittisilpa
    August 1, 2021 — 5.41pm

Bangkok: A Thai hospital morgue overwhelmed by COVID-19 deaths has begun storing bodies in refrigerated containers, resorting to a measure it last took in a devastating 2004 tsunami, as the country grapples with its biggest coronavirus outbreak.

Thailand on Saturday reported a daily record of 18,912 new cases and a record of 178 new deaths, bringing total accumulated cases to 597,287 and 4857 fatalities.

At Thammasat University Hospital near the capital Bangkok, a 10-freezer morgue usually handles up to seven autopsies a day. But the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic means it now has to deal with more than 10 bodies daily.

“There’s not enough space, so we bought two containers for bodies’ storage,” Pharuhat Tor-udom, a director of the hospital, said, adding the containers cost about 250,000 baht ($10,290) each...

    Workers catch two variants

    PUBLISHED : 13 JUL 2021 AT 04:00

Seven construction workers are suspected to have been infected with two variants of coronavirus at the same time, according to the Public Health Ministry.

Tests conducted at a large Bangkok construction site showed they were infected with the Alpha and Delta variants, first found in England and India respectively, Dr Supakit Sirilak, chief of the Department of Medical Sciences, said during the ministry's daily briefing yesterday.

As of now, they remain fit and have not developed any worrisome symptoms, said Dr Supakit. He further added that co-infection does not mean a patient's symptoms are more serious than those suffering from a single strain.

"However, more cases of mixed infections could lead to a hybrid and eventually, a new variant, something we don't want to see," he said.

Of the 1,737 workers at the construction site, 1,327 tested positive. Among them, 23.3% were infected with the Alpha variant and 73.7% with Delta.
