Livestock associated MRSA detected in GB piglets

    By Georgi Gyton, 11-Feb-2015
The discovery of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) in piglets in eastern England has been attributed to the bacteria being a “successful” species, rather than through overuse of antimicrobials.

MRSA discovery in English pigs 'not surprising', vets say

    10 February 2015 | By Alistair Driver

UK veterinary leaders have said it is ‘disappointing but not surprising’ that MRSA has been found in pigs in England for the first time.

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) has been isolated from piglets with skin disease from a breeder-finisher farm, located in eastern England.

According to a report in the Veterinary Record, two 10-day-old piglets with skin lesions were submitted to an Animal Plant and Health Agency veterinary investigation centre on December 30, 2014.

Eleven litters were affected and, of 60 piglets with the condition, six died.

The deadly bug, which is of particular concern because of its potential implications for drug resistance in human and animal medicine, was found in pigs in Northern Ireland last year but this is the first case identified in England.

In a joint statement the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and Pig Veterinary Society (PVS) said the pig industry was actively promoting testing of live pig imports or the herds from which they derive, even though this is not an official requirement.
