African swine fever detected in Taichung

The Ministry of Agriculture yesterday issued a five-day nationwide ban on transporting and slaughtering pigs after African swine fever was confirmed at a hog farm in Taichung’s Wuci District (梧棲) on Tuesday evening.

The detection means Taiwan has lost its status as the only Asian country free of classical swine fever (CSF), African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease.

Authorities pre-emptively culled 195 pigs at the farm at about 3am, disinfected the entire site to prevent the disease from spreading and set up a 3km-radius control zone restricting movement around the affected area, the ministry told a news conference...

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — No signs of further spread have been detected in Taichung’s African swine fever outbreak, which authorities said Monday likely originated from improperly cooked kitchen waste.

The Central Emergency Operation Center responding to ASF said the outbreak was confined to a single pig farm in Taichung’s Wuqi District, with one source of infection and no indication of wider transmission, per CNA. Since Oct. 22, authorities have inspected and tested farms in Taichung linked to the affected site.

Authorities also examined pig farms, rendering plants, meat markets, and slaughterhouses nationwide. However, they have not found any other infections or positive environmental samples apart from the affected location...
