Newcastle Disease outbreak hits north Chino

Throwing out grain to some of her more than 100 geese, ducks, and chickens, Connie Schofield said ?Everyone deserves a last meal, right??

For more than a week, Ms. Schofield who lives on a large property in the unincorporated area of north Chino, has been weeping, barely eating, hardly sleeping, and visiting with her birds, whom she calls ?her babies.?

Ms. Schofield received notice Sept. 26 that all her birds would be euthanized two days later because of an outbreak of virulent Newcastle Disease in the area. She was stunned because recent county tests had found them negative for the disease. The appointment was later cancelled and as of this Friday morning, the birds had not been euthanized.

A peacock and 10 chickens at neighbor Helen Rivera?s home were euthanized Sept. 28, leaving the woman in tears.

Ms. Schofield and Ms. Rivera are among thousands of residents in the Chino, Ontario, Montclair, and Pomona area affected by a new outbreak of Newcastle Disease, that is also hitting other areas in San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties, according to officials from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). There was also an isolated outbreak in Ventura County when a flock was moved from Compton to that county.

An outbreak of the bird-killing Newcastle disease has resulted in nearly 54,000 birds ? mostly chickens ? being euthanized in the greater Los Angeles area, with mandatory euthanasia operations ongoing in three areas.

Efforts continue in neighborhoods in Compton in Los Angeles County, Muscoy in San Bernardino County and in the Mira Loma area of Jurupa Valley in Riverside County. The disease, first identified by officials in mid-May, has been eradicated from eight other areas in those three counties as well as Ventura County...

Epidemiological comments February 5, 2019 update: ? Enhanced surveillance detected virulent Newcastle disease virus (vNDV) in birds sold by a retail feed store, two commercial chicken laying farms, and one non-commercial backyard chicken laying farm. The birds sold by the feed store showed increased mortality, and the birds at the commercial laying farm with 420,000 birds showed a decrease in egg production. ? All birds at the retail feed store, the commercial laying farm and the backyard non-commercial laying farm have been depopulated and all premises have been cleaned and disinfected. The birds at the commercial laying farm from the most recent detection will be depopulated. ? The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) are conducting an epidemiological investigation of these events.
