  • H5N4 avian flu: a case in Switzerland

In the Canton of Schaffhausen, the HPAI H5N4 avian influenza virus was found in a seagull. Measures to protect backyard poultry have already started last week and there is currently no need to extend them. This is the first case of bird flu in Switzerland this winter.

After the virus was detected in a swan and a crow near the border, an introduction of bird flu into Switzerland was to be expected. The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), in agreement with the cantonal authorities, has therefore already ordered measures to protect backyard poultry. According to current knowledge, the virus is not transmissible to humans.
