Sweden - Bird flu detected in wild birds and poultry - H5N8 - 2020/2021

Bird flu has been discovered in a turkey flock in Sk?ne. The infected birds will now be killed and the facility cleaned up. But there is no evidence that humans can be infected with the virus.

A farm in Sk?ne has been quarantined since the disease was found among turkeys on the farm. No animals or animal products may leave the farm, the infected birds must be killed and the facility cleaned up, according to the Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA).

The virus, H5N8, is highly contagious between birds, but there is no evidence that humans can be infected.

Avian influenza detected in wild birds

The Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA) has now detected highly pathogenic avian influenza of the type H5N8 in a white-cheeked goose and a peregrine falcon. Both were found in Lund municipality. Another white-cheeked goose sent in from Gotland is positive in an initial analysis and investigation is ongoing.

Bird flu has been found at a large hatching egg facility in Sk?ne. It shows test results from the Swedish Veterinary Institute, SVA. The infected birds will be killed and the buildings in question cleaned up.
The Swedish Board of Agriculture has also decided on a declaration of blockade, which means that no animals or animal products may leave the blocked area without the Swedish Board of Agriculture's permission.

In an area of 10 kilometers around the facility, the Swedish Board of Agriculture has established restriction areas where special restrictions apply to poultry facilities. The current bird flu virus H5N8 is highly contagious between birds. The risk for people in general to become infected is almost non-existent according to the Swedish Public Health Agency.
The outbreak has taken place at a large facility that supplies hatching eggs. At the facility, the infection was found in two of a total of twelve houses. The Swedish Board of Agriculture has decided that all 18,000 animals in the buildings in question will be killed and the buildings will be decontaminated.

Affected population	This is a establishment with parent poultry for the production of day old broiler chickens. It is divided into 12 buildings (1-12) that forms 7 separate epidemiological units. Each epidemiological unit has its own staff with strict biosecurity including a considerable distance between the units. Symtoms (high mortality) have only been seen in house 7, which forms an epidemiological unit with house 8.

A protection zone (3 km) and a surveillance zone (10 km) have been put in place around the establishment. All the poultry in this epidemiological unit (house 7 and 8) will be euthanized. All other restrictions and necessary measures according to Directive 2005/94/EG are/will be applied, including a prohibition of transportation of live birds, hatching eggs and not heat-treated poultry products in this area.

Large laying hen farm in Kalmar County affected by bird flu


Bird flu has been detected at another large poultry farm. It is the fifth affected farm this flu season. The previous cases have been in Sk?ne.

On Monday, it was confirmed that a large flock of laying hens in Kalmar County had been affected by highly pathogenic bird flu. The Swedish Board of Agriculture has decided to block the farm and has set up a restriction area of 10 kilometers around the facility where special restrictions apply to poultry facilities.

"It is very unfortunate that we have now received confirmation that another large poultry facility has been affected. The rest of Europe has been hit hard, especially France and the Netherlands, and it seems to be a very aggressive virus with a high mortality rate this flu season ", says H?kan Henrikson, chief veterinarian at the Swedish Board of Agriculture in a press release.

Half a million chickens are killed - the Home Guard is called in

Around half a million chickens will be killed on a farm in M?nster?s municipality after bird flu was found at the facility. The Swedish Board of Agriculture takes around 30 soldiers from the Home Guard to help, local media reports.

- We received a request from the Swedish Board of Agriculture for support with staff. We have said yes, and our concrete task is to package the birds after killing and put the birds in containers for further transport, says Jan Bohman, communications manager in the southern military region, to SVT Nyheter Sm?land.
