Bird Flu Outbreak Confirmed in Kagoshima Pref.

Kagoshima, Jan. 13 (Jiji Press)--The prefectural government of Kagoshima, southwestern Japan, said Wednesday that an outbreak of avian influenza believed to be highly pathogenic has been confirmed at a chicken farm in the town of Satsuma.

Kagoshima is the 15th Japanese prefecture to report a farm outbreak of such bird flu this season.

This is the prefecture's first bird flu outbreak at a farm in 10 years.

Kagoshima Prefecture started the work to cull all of some 32,600 chickens at the farm in Satsuma to prevent the spread of the infectious disease.
The prefectural government prohibited poultry farms within 3 kilometers of the affected facility from transferring their chickens and eggs and banned farms within 3 to 10 kilometers from moving their chickens and eggs outside the 10-kilometer zone.

Bird Flu Spreads to Chiba, 1st in Eastern Japan

Chiba, Dec. 24 (Jiji Press)--Chiba Prefecture announced Thursday an outbreak of avian influenza believed to be highly pathogenic at a chicken farm in the city of Isumi in the eastern Japan prefecture.

Since November, farm outbreaks of such bird flu have occurred in 12 prefectures, including the western prefecture of Kagawa and the southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki. Chiba is the 13th prefecture to report an outbreak this year and the first to do so in eastern Japan.

Chiba has the second-largest number of farmed egg-laying hens in the country, after Ibaraki Prefecture, also in eastern Japan.

The affected poultry farm is one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

To stem the spread of the infection, the Chiba prefectural government will cull all of some 1.16 million chickens at the farm, the biggest number ever in a single bird flu outbreak case in Japan.

Bird flu has been detected at chicken farms in the western Japanese prefectures of Tokushima and Miyazaki, leading to the culling of tens of thousands of chickens as the outbreak continues to spread in the country, the local governments said Saturday.

The H5 strain, yet to be confirmed as a highly pathogenic type, was detected for the first time in Tokushima, making it the 12th prefecture to report an avian flu outbreak case this year.

The farm in Awa, Tokushima, bordering Kagawa Prefecture where the year's first case of flu was confirmed, initially planned to cull 10,000 chickens but ended up with around 8,000 eventually.

There are 10 other farms keeping about 175,000 chickens within a 3-kilometer radius of the affected Tokushima farm, with all farms prohibited from moving eggs or chickens from the premises, according to the local government...
