  • Japan - HP H5N8 avian flu confirmed in poultry - 2020/2021 - 36 farms in 15 prefectures affected

    November 05 2020

Local authorities in western Japan began culling around 330,000 chickens Thursday after an outbreak of a highly pathogenic avian flu was confirmed at a chicken farm for the first time in nearly three years in the country.

The Kagawa prefectural government instructed chicken farms within a 3-kilometer radius of the infected site in Mitoyo not to move any poultry and eggs and is checking whether infections have occurred at other locations.

Farms within a 10-km radius are banned from transporting birds and eggs out of the area. The infected farm reported Wednesday a total of 3,800 chickens had died over a four-day period.

Kagawa / Mitoyo bird flu confirmed to be highly pathogenic

Kagawa Prefecture announced on the 6th that it has confirmed that a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in a poultry farm in Mitoyo City is highly pathogenic to the H5N8 subtype. Kagawa Prefecture has begun investigating the existence of dead wild birds around the pond on the same day, and is wary of the spread of the infection by proceeding with the burial of slaughtered chickens.

As a result of genetic analysis conducted by a national research institute, it was confirmed that it is highly pathogenic avian influenza.

New bird flu in Kagawa or the third poultry farm has been slaughtered

          2020/11/12

A dozen new chickens were found dead at a poultry farm in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, and a simple test revealed a positive reaction for bird flu, according to an interview with the prefecture on the 12th. Proceed with genetic testing for confirmation. If positive, it will be the fourth case of infection at a poultry farm this season.

In addition, the prefecture announced on the same day that the culling of all chickens raised in another poultry farm in Mitoyo City, where the third bird flu outbreak occurred this season, has been completed. 10,587 broiler breeding chickens were slaughtered.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that as a result of genetic analysis, the third virus was also confirmed to be highly pathogenic "H5N8 type". It is unclear whether it has the same origin as the first and second cases, and we are continuing to investigate including the infection route.

The third poultry farm was about 1 km from the first poultry farm in Mitoyo City, and the virus test on the 6th to 7th was negative. Within a radius of 10 km, about 4.33 million chickens are bred in 106 locations, excluding the first and third poultry farms, and the fourth is one of them.

On the 8th, a second outbreak was confirmed at a poultry farm in Higashikagawa City, about 50 km away from Mitoyo City. All prefectures consider migratory birds to be a likely source of infection.

Kagawa poultry farm Bird flu virus detection 5th case this month

            November 15, 2020

At a poultry farm in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, multiple chickens were found dead, and avian influenza virus, which appears to be highly pathogenic, was detected. This is the fifth case of bird flu virus detected in a poultry farm in Kagawa prefecture this month, and the prefecture has decided to dispose of about 80,000 chickens in this poultry farm.
According to Kagawa Prefecture, on the 14th, a poultry farm in Mitoyo City reported that "there are many dead chickens," and a detailed examination at the prefecture's livestock health center revealed that the "H5 type" bird was highly pathogenic. It means that the influenza virus has been detected.

This is the fifth case of avian influenza virus detected in Kagawa prefecture earlier this month.

The prefecture plans to dispose of about 79,000 chickens in captivity and bury them in the ground over the next 10 days.

On Thursday, media reported that a big number of birds had died at two farms in Kagawa.

Further tests confirmed that they had been infected with the bird flu, which meant that the Japanese authorities had discovered the sixth and the seventh outbreaks in several weeks.

According to the Kyodo news agency, 350,000 chickens would be culled at one farm and 495,000 at another one.

The highly pathogenic H5 flu was first detected at a bird farm near Kagawa's city Mitoyo, where nearly 4,000 chickens died between November 1 and 4. On November 13, Russia imposed restrictions on poultry imports from Japan over the bird flu outbreaks.

In Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, where avian influenza virus has been detected one after another, avian influenza virus, which seems to be highly pathogenic, was newly detected at two poultry farms. Kagawa Prefecture is proceeding with the disposal of approximately 850,000 chickens, including these two poultry farms and the neighboring poultry farms where people come and go.

According to Kagawa Prefecture, on the 19th, two poultry farms in Mitoyo City reported that "more chickens are dying than usual", and detailed examination revealed avian influenza virus that seems to be highly pathogenic. It means that.

In response to this, Kagawa Prefecture held a countermeasures headquarters meeting on the morning of the 20th, and confirmed that measures to prevent the spread, such as disposal of chickens at poultry farms, will be thoroughly implemented.

From around 8 am on the 20th, the prefecture is proceeding with the disposal of approximately 850,000 chickens, including two poultry farms and a nearby poultry farm where people and equipment come and go, with the cooperation of the Self-Defense Forces.

The two poultry farms are all within a range of about 3 km from the four poultry farms in the city where the virus has been detected so far, and the virus was detected by PCR tests conducted three times from the 5th of this month. I didn't.

In the future, the prefecture will investigate in detail whether there was any traffic of people or equipment with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

                        December 1, 2020

On the 30th, a chicken suspected of having bird flu was found at a poultry farm in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and as a result of genetic testing, it was confirmed to be "H5 type" bird flu. The prefecture has begun disposing of approximately 40,000 chickens raised in this poultry farm.

According to Miyazaki Prefecture, about 60 chickens were found dead at a poultry farm in Togo-cho, Hyuga City on the 30th, and a simple test for bird flu conducted by the prefecture confirmed positive.

When the prefecture conducted a more detailed genetic test, it was confirmed that it was "H5 type" bird flu at 4:30 am on the 1st.

According to the prefecture, there is a strong suspicion of high pathogenicity, and the country will carry out tests for confirmation.

Following the confirmation of bird flu, Miyazaki Prefecture has begun disposing of approximately 40,000 chickens raised in this poultry farm.

Mitoyo Kagawa 2 poultry farms Avian influenza virus detection 10th case in the prefecture

                          December 2, 2020 9:33

Avian influenza virus, which appears to be highly pathogenic, was newly detected at two poultry farms in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. Kagawa Prefecture is proceeding with the disposal of more than 370,000 chickens in poultry farms.

This is the 10th case of bird flu confirmed at a poultry farm in the prefecture this season.

According to Kagawa Prefecture, on the 1st, two poultry farms in Mitoyo City reported that "there are more chickens dead than usual" and a detailed examination revealed avian influenza virus that seems to be highly pathogenic. It was.

We will take measures to prevent spread, such as designating "restricted movement areas" within a radius of 10 km as "restricted export areas" that prohibit shipping from that area.

In Miho City, highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has been detected in a total of 7 poultry farms within a radius of 3 km since the 5th of last month, and the same is true for the poultry farm where the virus was detected this time. Since it is within the range, the prefecture will investigate the infection route in detail together with the country.

This is the 10th case of bird flu confirmed at a poultry farm in Kagawa prefecture this season.
