    Canine flu outbreak sickens dogs at Oakland animal shelter

    OAKLAND (KRON) -- There is a new warning to dog owners, the canine flu is back in the Bay Area and as you may remember it first arrived in the South Bay in January of last year.

    That outbreak sickened 188 dogs in Northern California in just one month.

    Now there's an outbreak in the East Bay at Oakland Animal Services.

    More than half of the dogs housed at Oakland's Animal Services have been sickened by the canine flu, a highly contagious virus, that if not treated can be deadly.

    The outbreak at Oakland Animal Services has sickened 55 of the shelter's 108 dogs, but it's believed all will likely become infected.

    "Where it came from, we can't possibly know. The symptoms, at least initially, look a lot like kennel cough, an upper respiratory illness," said Rebecca Katz, director of Oakland Animal Services...

    A growing dog flu outbreak in the East Bay has prompted animal shelters to quarantine sick dogs as the Fourth of July holiday triggers fears of a new spike in exposures.
