Foot-and-mouth now in North, says military

North Korea is apparently suffering from its own bout of foot-and-mouth disease, according to a South Korean military official.

?According to South Korean and U.S. intelligence, roads have been blocked by the military near Pyongyang to decrease movement of people,? said the official, who asked not to be named. The source said that quarantine measures are proving difficult for North Korea, which lacks preventive medicine such as vaccines and quicklime in which to bury contagious animals....

North Korea 'hit by foot-and-mouth outbreak'

North Korea has been hit by foot-and-mouth disease, reports from Seoul say.

A spokesperson for South Korea's Unification Ministry said that recent visitors had reported the outbreak of the communicable cattle disease.

But Lee Jong-hu said North Korea had not confirmed the outbreak.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said that Pyongyang had deployed military personnel to disinfect farms since the outbreak of the disease in December, citing an unnamed official in Seoul.

The authorities had blocked road traffic in affected areas and ordered residents not to travel, said another South Korean newspaper, the JoongAng Ilbo.

SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- North Korea reported to a U.N. food agency that foot-and-mouth disease -- rampantly spreading in South Korea -- has broken out on its soil as well, a U.S. broadcaster said Thursday.

Radio Free Asia (RFA), quoting an unidentified United Nations official, said that the communist country notified the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of an outbreak in a letter on Wednesday but did not provide details.

An email to the Rome-based U.N. agency seeking confirmation was not immediately returned while its South Korean office said it had no details. An official at South Korea's Unification Ministry, which handles affairs involving North Korea, said on condition of anonymity that the report "appears true considering intelligence that foot-and-mouth disease has recently hit the North..."

North Korea says it has been hit by an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, revealing that thousands of livestock have died.

On Thursday night the North's official Korean Central News Agency reported that the disease hit Pyongyang at the end of last year and was spreading throughout the nation.
It says that Pyongyang city, North Hwanghae and Gangwon provinces have been most affected.....

(LEAD) N. Korea's FMD outbreak spreads across country: report
SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has spread across many parts of the country after the first case was confirmed in the capital city on Dec. 25, a U.S. broadcaster said Sunday.

Radio Free Asia (RFA), quoting a report by the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health, said the communist country confirmed that since the first case hit a small cattle farm in Pyongyang, the highly contagious animal disease has spread to at least five provinces.

While there are no reports of animals being culled and buried to control further spreading of the disease, North Korea said 11,165 animals have been infected so far. Of these, 8,640 pigs have died along with 15 cattle, it said.

RFA also said that quarantine authorities had moved to vaccinate animals, but the locally produced drugs used had little effect in slowing down the disease. It added that emergency quarantine measures have been ordered to combat the spread of the animal disease that can be transmitted through the air...

Additional FMD case found in central S. Korea

SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed one more case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) on Tuesday as quarantine authorities pushed ahead with the second phase of nationwide vaccination of pigs and cattle.

The case, at a pig farm that raised 2,000 animals in Daejeon, brings the total number of officially confirmed FMD outbreaks since late November to 147, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

It is also the first confirmed case in the city, located 160 kilometers south of Seoul in the central part of the country...
