    Outbreak of foot and mouth in Lesoma

    The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) has reported an alleged outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the settlement of Lesoma, about 20km east of Kasane. It is reported that the first three cases were identified in cattle by an extension officer on the 3rd August 2010 but confirmatory laboratory investigations are on-going.

    Gazette is reliably informed that these unconfirmed cases of foot and mouth disease do not affect the current country export status. ?All export abattoirs will continue slaughtering as usual,? read a press statement from the department.

    The department has put in place with immediate effect certain measures to sensitize the public on how to reduce the risk of spread and determine the extent of the outbreak, which includes surveillance and emergency vaccination in order to reduce the rate of disease spread.

    In so doing, the movement of all cloven hoofed animals and their derived fresh products, including FMD risk material like grass is not allowed within and out of Chobe District...
