Japan suspends beef exports after detecting foot-and-mouth infection

TOKYO (AP) - Japan suspended beef exports Tuesday after detecting suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease in several cows in the south of the country, officials said.

Three of 16 beef cows raised at a farm in Miyazaki developed mouth ulcers — a typical early symptom of the disease — earlier this month, prompting authorities to impose a ban that will last at least three months, said Agriculture Minister Hirotaka Akamatsu.

Japan exported 565 tons of beef, worth $40 million (3.8 billion yen) in fiscal 2009 ended March, mostly to Vietnam, Hong Kong and the U.S., according to the ministry...

    More suspected foot-and-mouth cases

TOKYO - JAPANESE officials reported more suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease on Sunday, days after announcing the country's first outbreak in a decade.

The government of the southern prefecture of Miyazaki, on Kyushu island, said four cows had tested positive for the highly contagious disease at a farm with 725 cattle. All of the cows on the farm will be culled to prevent further spread, the prefecture government said in a statement.

'We plan to kill all the cows, bury contaminated items and to disinfect the affected farm,' the prefecture said.

The announcement came after the same prefecture said on April 20 that it had slaughtered a herd of 16 cows on another farm after three of them tested positive for foot-and-mouth. It is the first outbreak of the disease in Japan since 2000...

Japan's 1st suspected cases of foot-and-mouth in pigs reported

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock have been found at three more locations in Miyazaki Prefecture, including Japan's first suspected cases involving pigs, the local government and the farm ministry said Wednesday.

The latest findings bring the tally of suspected infections to 10 and will result in the slaughter of about 2,900 cows and pigs in total in an effort to prevent the disease from spreading, the Miyazaki prefectural government said.

Five cows at a farm and five pigs at a livestock experiment station in the town of Kawaminami, where other cows were already confirmed infected last week, tested positive for the disease, while four to eight cows are suspected to have the disease at a farm in Ebino, a city more than 50 kilometers in Miyazaki.

The prefectural government restricted the movement of livestock within 10 kilometers of the Ebino farm, and banned removing livestock from an area within 20 km of the farm, thus affecting some parts of neighboring Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures.
