Update dead wild boar at Fagerstazonen

The page was last reviewed: 2023-09-10

After the samples from the carcasses that were sampled yesterday were analyzed, there are now seven positive cases of African swine fever in wild boar.

One of the cases is approximately 300 meters into Norberg municipality, but it is still within what is considered the core area. That sample was from a carcass that had been observed prior to the active search for carcasses.

    - The search for carcasses in the area continues and during the day more carcasses were sampled which will be analyzed tomorrow. According to the plan, the search begins in the area around the first detected case and the area is expanded as time goes on. So far, the results are completely in line with our expectations, says state epizootologist Karl Ståhl.

On the SVA website there is a map with the monitoring of African swine fever, which is updated daily. Two of the carcasses were found next to each other and look like a dot on the map, but they are two animals.

Swine fever: several countries suspend imports of Swedish pork

      By Le Figaro with AFP
Published 2 hours ago, updated1 hour ago

At least six countries have suspended imports of Swedish pork after a recent outbreak of African swine fever among wild boars in the Scandinavian country, industry officials said Monday.

Armenia, Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Ukraine, as well as Taiwan, have decided to no longer import pork from Sweden, the Swedish Meat Industry Association (KCF) told AFP. ), although cases of swine fever have at this stage only been detected in wild boars. “ This meat poses no danger ,” says Magnus Därth, general delegate of KCF. “ I find this unreasonable, but it is standard procedure when cases of African swine fever are detected», he emphasizes, specifying that each time it is the same countries which block imports for this reason. Since September 6, seven cases have been identified in dead wild boars near Fagersta, some 145 kilometers northwest of Stockholm. The origin of the epidemic remains unknown for the time being, the latest cases of this epizootic having been recorded in Germany , Poland and the Baltic countries.

      A virus harmless to humans

“ We assume that (the virus) was introduced by human activity and not by wild boars ” given the geographical distance that separates these countries from Sweden, the Swedish National Veterinary Institute said in a statement. Swedish authorities blocked public access to the area (1,000 square kilometers) where the infected wild boars were located. African swine fever does not transmit to humans but is very contagious and fatal for pigs and their wild counterparts such as wild boar. An outbreak can be potentially devastating for the pork industry, experts say.

In 2018, China, the world's largest pork producer, saw its herd decimated by an epidemic of African swine flu: millions of animals were slaughtered to stem the spread of the virus. Sweden exports around 30,000 tonnes of pork each year, almost half of which goes to European Union countries. According to Mr. Därth's estimates, the cessation of the cited imports will lead to a loss of income of 50 million crowns (4.2 million euros) per year, for a sector whose annual revenues amount to around 30 billion crowns.

The page was last reviewed: 2023-09-11

2023-09-11. The Norwegian Veterinary Institute, SVA, has detected more positive wild boars within the zone. After the samples from the carcasses sampled yesterday have been analyzed, there are a total of thirteen positive cases of African swine fever in wild boar.

          - As we told you yesterday, it is completely as expected that we find more positive cases in the area. The search for carcasses continues and according to plan, the search will begin in the area around the first detected case, but the search area will be expanded as time goes on. It is a difficult terrain and the participating hunters do a fantastic job, says state epizootologist Karl Ståhl.

On the SVA website there is a map with the monitoring of African swine fever, which is updated daily. Two of the carcasses were found next to each other and look like a dot on the map, but they are two animals.

African swine fever (ASF) update 9/14

The page was last reviewed: 2023-09-14

So far, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, SVA, has confirmed 18 cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar, all within a radius of 2 kilometers. In the area where cases have already been found, the expectation is to find more cases, the findings are as expected. The search for carcasses in the zone continues and this coming weekend extensive search efforts will be carried out in the outer parts of the zone. These will contribute important information to understand the spread of the infection.

At the same time as there are intensive search efforts in the zone, swine fever monitoring is also ongoing in the rest of the country. Monitoring is based on hunters and the public reporting dead wild boars they find to SVA via reportervilt.sva.se. The report states where the wild boar has been found so that it can be recovered for sampling. The reporter is contacted by SVA and asked if he can take a sample and send it in for analysis. In that case, SVA sends out transport material that is approved for the transport of samples.

If it is a single dead wild boar, this goes via regular mail, they are then seen as samples within the SVA's ongoing monitoring and not as a suspicion that urgently needs to be analyzed. If there are several dead wild boars in the same place, there is a different degree of urgency and samples are then usually transported by courier, then you also do not need to wait for special transport material.

We publish the answers from the continuous monitoring outside the zone on an ongoing basis in our map. Should anything be positive outside, this will be announced via press release.

            - We get a lot of questions about individual wild boars in other parts of the country and we also get questions about why it sometimes takes time before these are sampled. The explanation is that in individual wild boars we take samples to continuously monitor the situation, but we do not suspect that they have swine fever and it would be prohibitively expensive to send in these samples. It is better to use a delivery van and the costs it entails when there is reason to hurry. All those who take the time to report findings of dead wild boars, and other dead species for that matter, are making a very important contribution to our disease surveillance in the country.

Anyone interested in reading more about how disease surveillance for various infectious agents in animals is designed in Sweden can read more in the annual report Surveillance of infectious diseases in animals and humans 2022 and in the report Disease surveillance of wild animals in Sweden 2022.

Update African swine fever (ASF) 15/9

The page was last reviewed: 2023-09-15

So far, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, SVA, has confirmed 20 cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar. All positive cases are still within the so-called core area. The search for carcasses continues and tomorrow extensive search efforts will begin in the outer parts of the zone. After the weekend, the picture of the spread of the infection will be clearer.

SVA is working to improve how we make available information about the surveillance and the outbreak. There will soon be two maps – one showing the outbreak and wild boars surveyed within the zone, and one showing ongoing wild boar monitoring in the rest of the country. The goal is to update the maps daily in the afternoon, regardless of whether there are new test answers or not. Sample answers will not be available every day, which is partly because it varies when samples come in. In part, a balance is made of how quickly it is to analyze each sample. Further tests in the vicinity of the identified positive carcasses do not change our picture of the situation, then, in order to maintain a high efficiency, we can wait a few days to analyze these. If it concerns a sample that could change our picture of the situation, the sample is analyzed quickly.

              - Before the search efforts this weekend, an information meeting was organized yesterday in Fagersta and the turnout of hunters was absolutely fantastic. There are many of us who are working together now to do what we can to limit this outbreak, both locally and centrally at authorities and within various organizations. This applies to many different areas, everything from searching for and sampling rotting carcasses and reaching agreements on compensation, to making data flows and visualization on the web work. All the pieces are necessary for it to work. Seeing how everyone contributes is touching, I really want to express my thanks to everyone who is involved, says Karl Ståhl, State Epizootologist, SVA
During the day, SVA also published an epidemiological situational picture of the outbreak .

An infected zone has been established and all necessary measures according to Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687 are being applied. In accordance with the WOAH Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Article 15.1.4.3, Sweden is still considered to be free from ASF in domestic pigs and captive wild pigs, as the confirmed and suspected cases are wild suidae. Update on 20 September 2023: In total, samples from 37 dead wild boars have been positive for ASF in the area, up until 19 September 2023.

Today there are no new test results from SVA to present, the number of confirmed cases so far is shown both in the map and in the table.

SVA receives many questions about the exact number of positive tests. An adjustment made yesterday, after data validation revealed that a few carcasses had been sampled twice, also raised questions. Before the Swedish Agency for Agriculture built a local sampling center in Fagersta, the carcasses were sampled on site in the forest, now a collection of carcasses and sampling takes place at the sampling center. In the transition between systems, a few carcasses have been sampled both in the field and at the sampling center. When this was discovered, the results in the table and map were corrected.

                - We understand the interest in following the development in the form of the number of cases, but at the same time we want to emphasize that, on the whole, the total number of positive cases in the area where the infection has already been confirmed plays less of a role. It is known that the infection is present in that area, it is fully expected to find more positive cases there and additional cases will not change the picture of the outbreak. However, what contributes more to our understanding of the spread of the infection are the search efforts that are carried out in the parts of the zone where infection has not yet been detected. No other area of high mortality among wild boar has yet been found, but the entire infected zone has not yet been searched. Work is underway to compile the fantastic search efforts that have been made so far,
