ROME (Reuters) – African swine fever has been found in a wild boar in Italy’s capital Rome, the regional government said in a statement on Thursday.

An isolated outbreak of the deadly hog disease was reported in northwest Italy at the start of the year and the Rome case was the first time the illness had been detected in the centre of the country.

Several thousand boar are believed to live in and around Rome, foraging for food in often overflowing rubbish bins. Officials carried out tests after a dead boar was discovered in the north of the city, and found it had swine fever...

      EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The animal was found in the Insugherata natural park, the epidemiological investigation is still ongoing. At the moment it is hypothesized that the introduction of the ASF virus is purely due to human factors. The analyses confirmed the positivity for genotype 2 as reported, the same strain currently circulating in Europe.

African swine fever detected in pig livestock near Rome for first time
          Thu, June 9, 2022 at 1:38 PM·1 min read

ROME (Reuters) - Two cases of swine fever have been found in pigs at a farm near Rome, local media quoted health authorities as saying on Thursday, the first time in Italy that the African disease has spread from wild boar to livestock.

Alessio D'Amato, a health official of the Lazio region of which Rome is the capital, was quoted as telling La Repubblica newspaper that pigs on the farm will be culled...

Italy to kill 1,000 pigs in swine fever outbreak
            Published June 10, 2022, 6:25 PM
            by Agence-France-Presse

ROME, Italy — A thousand pigs will be slaughtered after two cases of swine fever were detected on a farm in Rome’s Lazio region, officials said Friday, spurring fears of a blow to the country’s pork industry.

“We have to slaughter all the pigs in the contaminated area very quickly,” Angelo Ferrari, tasked with managing the crisis, told AGI news agency.

The local health agency estimated 1,000 pigs would have to be culled to stem the spread, he said.

“The sooner we act decisively and incisively, the greater our hope that the commercial damage will be reduced,” he said.

Italy, with about 8.9 million pigs, is the seventh biggest pork producer in the European Union, representing an eight-billion-euro ($9.1 billion) industry, according to the agricultural association Confagricoltura.

The two case of African swine fever detected in Lazio are the first among farmed pigs in Italy. Before that, cases were detected in wild boar in January in northern Italy, then in the Lazio region...

The swine fever epidemics in Lazio and Piedmont have different origins: because it is good news

              Editorial board Wednesday, August 3, 2022 - 4:02 pm

PIEDMONT - The genetic investigations conducted by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Abruzzo and Molise which is based in Teramo, have established with certainty that the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) that has affected the suidae in Rome and Lazio is of a cluster of different viral genotype compared to the cluster responsible for the spread of the disease in Piedmont and Liguria. The analyzes undoubtedly show that the two outbreaks are not connected to each other as they are due to introductions of the virus from different sources.

“ It is a positive fact, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the containment and isolation actions carried out in the Piedmont and Ligurian territory in terms of control and contrast to the spread of the disease. The difference between the two viruses, in fact, has also been recognized at the biomolecular level. Although they belong to the same strain, the two viruses, in fact, have different mutations “, declared the Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Health delegated to the PSA emergency, Andrea Costa and the extraordinary Commissioner for the PSA emergency, Angelo Ferrari.

The one provided by the Teramo Institute is an encouraging fact in the struggle for the eradication of the disease and demonstrates the goodness of the work carried out by the national network of Experimental Zooprophylactic Institutes.

Following the finding of a dead wild boar in northern Italy, the positivity for genotype 2 is reported, the same strain currently circulating in Europe, that characterizes the epidemic wave that began in 2007. The confirmation date originally reported (06/01/2022) has been amended to reflect greater accuracy, after the verification of information by the Veterinary Services and ASF National Reference Laboratory.

                  EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

The animal was found in the Insugherata natural park, the epidemiological investigation is still ongoing. At the moment it is hypothesized that the introduction of the African swine fever virus is purely due to human factors. The analysis confirmed the positivity for genotype 2, the same strain currently circulating in Europe. Note (31/20/2022): Outbreak, with reference PSAWB_2022_151 (ob_103590), was deleted. The reason for the cancellation is as follows: `In October 2022, Italy informed the Commission that the continuous and detailed disease control measures and the passive surveillance of kept and wild porcine animals demonstrate the absence of the circulation of the African swine fever virus in the Rieti province, and that the Italian competent authority is in a position to conclude that the suspected case of African swine fever in the Rieti province should not be considered as a confirmed case of African swine fever in accordance with Article 9(2), point (b), of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/689 because, despite the fact that a nucleic acid specific to the disease was identified in the results of tests on the animal, the animal did not show any clinical signs consistent with the disease and any epidemiological links with another suspected or confirmed cases was ruled out.'

Swine fever: CIA, first case in Lombardy. Avoid national catastrophe now

                        23 June 2023

The discovery in Bagnaria, the Varzi Dop salami area. The point with Fini, Carenini, Maccazzola

African swine fever (ASF) has arrived in Lombardy. If action is not taken immediately, it will be a national catastrophe. With the ascertained discovery, in these hours, of an infected wild boar carcass in Bagnaria (Pavia), an area among others of the Varzi Dop salami , the region with the highest production of pork meat derivatives in Italy is dramatically at risk among the main ones in the world. CIA-Agricoltori Italiani raises the alarm and asks the Extraordinary Commissioner for PSA, Vincenzo Caputi, to take immediate remedial action.

“The situation is extremely serious - reports the president of Cia Lombardia, Paolo Maccazzola -. We need to stem this scourge, before the circulation of pork-derived products is blocked. We cannot leave all the responsibility for containment in the hands of hunters and forest rangers , we need targeted and above all rapid culling. The Region -adds Maccazzola- had already moved to contain the phenomenon, but now the checks and killings in the affected area must be intensified".

“At this point, with the already well-known critical element on the PSA front in late summer, we ask that the army be activated -intervenes the CIA national wildlife officer, Gabriele Carenini-. We need to drastically reduce the number of wild boars in circulation and do it with qualified personnel. We renew our willingness to collaborate, but we need to act now".

Pig farming is a key pillar of Italian animal husbandry which is strong in many regional productions of the highest quality. “The wild boar emergency and the ASF phenomenon have been underestimated for too long - comments the national president of CIA, Cristiano Fini - leaving, in fact, a fundamental production of our agri-food Made in Italy to be compromised. We are now at 7 regions affected by the epidemic. It's time to say enough - concludes Fini - to safeguard the sector, as well as all the efforts made up to now, also to protect the export of national pig production. The PSA advances, we must do it too. We ask the Government to support the commissioner structure with all the necessary tools and to finally listen to us, reforming the law 157/92”.

PORK FARMING IN NORTHERN ITALY - Today, almost 90% of national pig farms are concentrated in Lombardy (50% of the total number of animals), Piedmont (14%) and Emilia-Romagna (13%). The agricultural phase (32,000 pig farms) generates a value of over 3 billion euros with an incidence equal to 5.7% of the total value of national agricultural production, almost 20% of that achieved by the entire animal husbandry. The cured meats industry achieves a turnover of over 8 billion euros with an incidence of 5.6% on that of the national food sector.

The farms are characterized by a strong territorial concentration of the animals, in particular in the area of the Po Valley ein just one region, Lombardy, there is more than half of the national pig herd and more than 38% of the value of national pig farming is achieved. It has 2,739 pig farms and 4,156,583 animals raised. AT NATIONAL LEVEL - 11 billion in turnover and 70,000 employees in the pork supply chain, the spearhead of Made in Italy, depend on the national pig sector. It has 21 PDOs and 12 PGIs which make Italian delicatessen unique in the world, with a total annual value of 1.6 billion in exports.

                              CREMONA
ATS: we slaughter 98% of pigs, wild boars to date negative

                              July 10, 2023

After the first two cases of African swine fever in the province of Pavia, the level of alert by the health authorities is raised. in the Cremona area, only five dead wild boars were found, all negative for ASF.

"The alarm concerns everyone and is deeply felt due to the fact that here we preside over an area with a very high pig breeding population". The situation in the Cremona area is explained by Maurilio Giorgi , director of the Veterinary Department and Food Safety of Animal Origin of Ats Val Padana. Interviewed from Cremona Today, Giorgi takes stock of the cases of African swine fever in 2 wild boars in the Pavia area

Pigs and wild boars- "Only in Ats Valpadana there are over 2 million pigs, with a remarkable induced, as far as slaughter is concerned, as we slaughter 98% of the pigs present in the Lombardy Region" - explains Giorgi. In the Cremona area there are only five dead wild boars found so far, and all have tested negative for swine fever. Nonetheless, a health alert is still in place. "We are dealing with communicating the risks to farmers through targeted meetings which for now have affected about 50-60% of the interested parties" continues Giorgi. "We wanted to raise awareness and update them on the latest news, but also on what the risks are and how to keep the virus away".

Repercussions on exports - An absolute priority, as the consequences of a contagion in our farms would be truly devastating - underlines the director of the Veterinary Department. “First of all, it causes a very high mortality among farmed pigs: within 7-10 days all the animals present die. Secondly, by resisting a lot in the environment and in meat, the virus can be a source of further infections. Also for this reason, many countries ban products that come from infected areas, especially third countries. For example, China no longer takes meat from Italy, Korea does not take the one that comes from the region affected by the infection, while the USA and Canada limit themselves to not buying meat that comes from the province where the infection was found " .

Actions in the field - The health authorities implement various actions, starting from the verification, on farms, that the biosecurity measures provided for by ministerial decrees are respected. “In our area, for now, these requirements are limited to the delimitation of breeding areas, as well as methods of entry through filter areas for personnel and disinfection and the imposition of changing clothes. Measures that will enter into force from July 26 , the date beyond which non-compliance will be sanctioned.

Scenarios - "When we were to end up in restricted zones I and II, to allow pigs to be slaughtered and for meat to be unrestricted at least on the Community market, enhanced biosecurity measures would be needed, i.e. rearing areas surrounded by barriers to evidence of livestock, which cannot be torn up by wild boars "concludes the veterinary director.

Dopo i primi due casi di Peste Suina Africana in provincia di Pavia, si alza il livello di allerta da parte delle autorità sanitarie. nel cremonese, solo cinque i cinghiali morti rinvenuti, tutti negativi alla PSA.
