      EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Since 22nd of July, measures including release of sterile insects in the field have been implemented in two (2) points, 9.5 liters of insects (approximately), weekly; this measure will be maintained for a period equal to three (3) biological cycles of the agent from the last case detected (16th August). Aerial release of sterile insects, by means of 2 weekly flights, at a dose of 3,000 flies per linear nautical mile. Specific epidemiological surveillance was carried out in all farms within a 5 km radius around Pigandí Grande case, without any other finding. Routine surveillance, health education campaigns (for local people, producers, technicians, among others) and release measures will be maintained for a period of three (3) biological cycles (9 weeks).

        EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Since July 22, measures of sterile insect ground release have been implemented in two (2) points, 9.5L of insects (76,000 sterile insects), weekly, and this measure will be maintained for a period equal to three (3) biological cycles of the agent, from the last case detected (October 21). Aerial dispersion of sterile insects, by means of 2 weekly flights, at a dose of 3,000 flies per linear nautical mile. Special epidemiological sweep of all farms within a 5 km radius of the Pigandi case, without finding new cases of Cochliomyia hominivorax. Routine surveillance, health education campaigns (to villagers, producers, technicians, among others) and terrestrial dispersal measures will be maintained for a period of three (3) biological cycles (9 weeks). To date, the crawl involves visiting 78 farms to interview producers and their workers and checking the animals for new cases, taking samples or healing wounds, if any. The deployment of technical personnel involved in the traceback has been increased. November 8: In the last farm where there was a case, 19 liters of insects (152,000 sterile insects) are being dispersed, the two weekly flights are maintained with the same distribution and the health education campaign is being maintained. no new cases of GBG have been detected. 77 new producers have been visited.

        AFFECTED POPULATION DESCRIPTION
        - Terrestrial release of sterile insects: starting July 22, 2022, two terrestrial release points will be initiated in areas with favorable habitat for the insect around the cases detected in La Ocho and Pigandí Grande. From August 23, 2022, a new reinforcement point will be started, which will be maintained for three biological cycles of the insect starting from the last case detected on September 10, 2022 (nine weeks approx.). In two points 9.5 liters of insects (76,000 sterile insects) are released per week and in the third point 19 liters of insects (152,000 sterile insects). - Aerial dispersion: two weekly aerial dispersion flights are carried out with sterile insects over the affected area at a dose of 3,000 flies per linear nautical mile. - Health education campaigns and special ground dispersal measures are maintained until nine weeks have elapsed in each case detected (three biological cycles of the event). - Field surveillance: epidemiological surveillance is being maintained around the cases detected; epidemiological tracing was carried out in 53 farms, where no new cases of Cochliomyia hominivorax were detected. Animals inspected as of December 15, 2022: 2834 birds, 9630 bovine, 18 buffaloes, 177 canids, 327 equids, 16 sheep and 238 swine.

MIDA intensifies actions for the eradication, control and prevention of the Livestock Screwworm and disease surveillance

                  By Public Relations / Featured , Press Releases , News / July 25, 2023

The Ministry of Agricultural Development through the National Directorate of Animal Health, before the Screwworm Outbreaks, through the Action Plan for the Control and Eradication of the Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), has drawn up a joint strategy with the Panama- United States Program for the Eradication and Prevention of Livestock Screwworms (COPEG), which includes tracking actions, sampling, sterile fly release, trap placement, movement control, orientation and training of producers, citizens in general, technical staff of other institutions and private

In response to the Declaration of the State of Animal Health Emergency, actions have been intensified by creating brigades made up of Animal Health veterinarians, interns and MIDA assistants together with veterinarians and COPEG technicians at the national level to carry out these actions.

The participation of the farmers is crucial for the success of this animal health campaign, with the application of the following measures: Frequent inspection of the animals; Timely treatment of animal wounds until they are cured; Taking and sending samples of worms; Transport only healthy animals and Report and denunciation of cases.

Ranchers are called for early notification of suspected cases of Livestock Screwworm

                  By Public Relations / Featured , Press Releases , News / July 26, 2023

The call to farmers and producers for early notification of suspected cases was one of the main issues discussed at a meeting led by the Vice Minister of Agricultural Development, Alexis Pineda, as part of the actions being developed for the control and eradication of the Cattle Screwworm.

In this meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the Panama-United States Commission for the Control and Eradication of Livestock Screwworm (COPEG), located in Pacora, authorities from Senafront, Police, the livestock sector, Oirsa, producers and Regional directors participated. , of Quarantine, Animal Health and Plant Health, of MIDA.

During his speech, Pineda said that they were evaluating the reports to advance in the mitigation of this disease and that in an upcoming meeting with the COPEG Commissioners, all the strategies that have been implemented will be refined.

The dispersal of flies, training, as well as the distribution of flyers, placement of billboards, posters at strategic points nationwide and the reinforcement of quarantine posts have been some of the initiatives for the control and eradication of this disease, which is affecting the cattle population.

Enrique Samudio, director of the Panamanian part of COPEG, pointed out that in the last week there has been a decrease in reported cases (133), almost half of the previous epidemiological week; but he highlighted that new cases have been detected in Las Tablas, Los Santos and Chiriquí, so he considers that, although we have a decrease in cases, the distribution seems to be growing.

He said that this disease must be detected in a timely manner to respond in the same way.

The director of Animal Health at MIDA, Carlos Moreno, mentioned that the effect of the fly, one of the biological mitigation measures for the disease, does not have an immediate effect, since it is progressive, which is why field measures are required. , early notification of cases and establishing specific points for the dispersal of sterile flies, through air grids and land releases.

He also called on producers to notify suspected cases of this disease, with which there will be direct action for the treatment and collection of samples, resulting in a clear picture of the distribution of the disease nationwide. .

During the meeting, they took the opportunity to make a symbolic delivery of chemicals and products necessary for producers to treat the wounds of their animals in rural regions and different posts across the country by veterinarians.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
