  • Fate of Joe, the US stowaway pigeon named after the President-elect...UPDATE Joe is a native Australian bird - safe

    UPDATE: https://apnews.com/article/australia...902b1ed4270345

I'd suggest getting a recording of the owner's voice or whatever mechanism used to retrieve Joe and using that to lure him. Certainly the 2 countries can work together to save Joe.

Racing pigeon that survived 13,000km journey from US to Australia now faces euthanasia

Australian quarantine authorities have contacted Melbourne man who found the bird saying they are concerned about disease threat
A racing pigeon that survived a 13,000km Pacific Ocean crossing from the United States to Australia now faces being euthanised as a quarantine risk.

Kevin Celli-Bird said he discovered that the exhausted bird that arrived in his Melbourne backyard on Boxing Day had disappeared from a race in the US state of Oregon on 29 October.

Experts suspect the pigeon that Celli-Bird has named Joe, after the US president-elect, Joe Biden, hitched a ride on a cargo ship to cross the Pacific.

Celli-Bird said the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service called him on Thursday to ask him to catch the bird, after its arrival was reported in the media.

“They say if it is from America, then they’re concerned about bird diseases,” Celli-Bird said. “They wanted to know if I could help them out. I said, ’To be honest, I can’t catch it. I can get within 500mm of it and then it moves.’”...

Good news - Joe might not be killed after all.

Joe the pigeon's life may be spared after fake leg tag suggests he's not from US
Thought at first to be a racing pigeon posing a biosecurity risk, Joe could be free as a bird after suggestion of mistaken identity
Australia’s Department of Agriculture is making inquiries after the American Pigeon Racing Union claimed that Joe, a pigeon that was thought to have travelled to Australia from the US, is actually a fraud – a revelation that may well save his life.

      ...
Victorian Animal Justice party MP Andy Meddick wanted the federal government to put the bird in quarantine rather than kill it.

“Should the federal government allow Joe to live, I am happy to seek assurances that he is not a flight risk,” he said.

“My message to the federal government is this: take Joe off death row.”

The Victorian health minister, Martin Foley, is also in the “save Joe” camp.

“I would urge the commonwealth quarantine officials to show a little bit of compassion to Joe,” he said.

The minister was then asked whether the state government was showing the same compassion to Victorians stranded in New South Wales because of border closures.

“I’m pretty sure we’re not planning to euthanise the people from Victoria who are in NSW, so I will take great exception to that,” Foley said.

A racing pigeon has survived an extraordinary 8,000-mile Pacific Ocean crossing from the United States to find a new home in Australia. Now authorities consider the bird a quarantine risk and plan …

An American pigeon named Joe made his way to Australia — and now the government wants him dead

But this worldly bird isn’t going quietly

A racing pigeon sits on a rooftop Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, in Melbourne, Australia, The racing pigeon, first spotted in late Dec. 2020, appears to have made an extraordinary 13,000-kilometer (8,000-mile) Pacific Ocean crossing from the United States to Australia. ....
Celli-Bird, who says he has no interest in birds “apart from my last name,” said he could no longer catch the pigeon with his bare hands since it had regained its strength.

He said the Oklahoma-based American Racing Pigeon Union had confirmed that Joe was registered to an owner in Montgomery, Alabama.

Celli-Bird said he had attempted to contact the owner, but had so far been unable to get through.

The bird spends every day in the backyard, sometimes sitting side-by-side with a native dove on a pergola. Celli-Bird has been feeding it pigeon food from within days of its arrival.

“I think that he just decided that since I’ve given him some food and he’s got a spot to drink, that’s home,” he said....
