    African swine fever reported in Manipur, illegal import of pigs blamed
    Last year, the African swine fever killed many pigs in Assam, subsequently the import of the animal was prohibited in Manipur.

    The contagious African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported in Manipur, said officials, assuring that the situation is under control. Director of state veterinary and Animal husbandry Dr Chaoba Singh said that the disease has been detected in the Salungpham area in Thoubal district and Nongmaiching Chingkhong(Wakha) area in Imphal East district.

    “So the said areas have been sealed and sanitised. One km radius of the area has also been contained to prevent further spread of the disease,” Dr Chaoba said. “The surveillance is going on within 10 km radius of the areas too.”

    Singh suspected the illegal import of pigs as the reason behind the disease.

    Last year, the ASF killed many pigs in Assam, subsequently the import of the animal was prohibited in Manipur...

    87 pigs die in Mizoram village near Bangladesh border, panic over ASF suspicion

    More than 80 pigs died in south Mizoram's Lunglei district over the last two weeks, triggering panic in the area that is near the Bangladesh border, an official said on Sunday.

    The 87 deaths, which happened in the Lungsen village, have caused losses to the tune of ?40 lakh, he said.

    "Though the cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that the animals died due to African Swine Fever (ASF)," said Lalhmingthanga, the Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department...

      African Swine Fever confirmed to be cause of pig deaths in Mizoram

      Aizawl, April 13: African Swine Fever has been confirmed to be the cause of death of over 600 pigs in Mizoram, officials said today.

      A high-level meeting was chaired by animal husbandry & veterinary minister Dr K Beichhua to discuss the outbreak of African Swine Fever that has claimed the lives of 671 pigs across Mizoram till today.

      Officials of the department informed the meeting that samples sent to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal tested positive for ASF. “Further confirmation to identify the serotype through genome sequencing is still awaited,” they said...
