Fourth Bulgarian pig farm hit by African swine fever

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgarian veterinary authorities said on Tuesday they would cull 17,000 pigs after detecting an outbreak of African swine fever at a breeding farm in the northeast, the fourth industrial farm hit by the fast-spreading virus.

The outbreak was detected at a farm in the village of Popina, near the Danube town of Silistra. Some 87,000 pigs have been killed on another three farms in the past 10 days.

European Union-member Bulgaria has so far detected more than 20 outbreaks of African swine fever at industrial or backyard farms in the northern part of the country.

Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva said on Monday 20-km sanitary zones were being set up around all 62 registered industrial pig farms in the Black Sea state with no small private pig farms and home-breeding of pigs without bio-security measures allowed in the zones...

Fifth Bulgarian pig farm hit by African swine fever
                    Reuters?July 30, 2019

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgarian authorities said on Wednesday that they would cull another 17,000 pigs after detecting an outbreak of African swine fever at a breeding farm in the north of the country, the fifth hit by the fast-spreading virus this month.

The outbreak was detected at a farm in a village near the Danube town of Svishtov. More than 100,000 pigs have already been culled at four other farms in the past two weeks.

Industry officials fear that the virus could wipe out the Balkan country's entire pig herd of about 500,000 and cause damages of up to 2 billion levs ($1.14 billion).

African Swine Fever: More than 100 000 pigs in northern Bulgaria killed
Written by The Sofia Globe staff on August 1, 2019 in Bulgaria -

The outbreaks of African Swine Fever in Bulgaria have resulted in more than 100 000 pigs being culled in the northern part of the country, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) said on the evening of August 1.

Estimates from before the outbreak of African Swine Fever put the number of registered pigs in Bulgaria at a maximum 600 000.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has begun checks in small towns in northern Bulgaria to see if farmers have voluntarily got rid of their pigs, the report said.

The deadline for doing so in districts in that part of Bulgaria expired on July 31. Failure to comply means a fine of 100 to 1000 leva (about 50 to 500 euro).

Efforts by veterinary authorities in Rousse, the largest city on Bulgaria?s Danube border, are currently aimed at controlling the outbreak of African Swine Fever in the town of Byala, where a sick pig was found in a farmyard. In the area, 140 animals will be euthanised at six unregistered small farms.

However, employees of the Regional Food Safety Agency say that they often encounter resistance and misunderstanding by farmers in small towns about how serious the disease is, the BNT report said.

None of the pig farms in Rousse has completed the euthanasia and burial of the pigs. This is expected to take place within five days.

An owner of a farm in Brushlen, one of the first places where an outbreak of African Swine Fever, told BNT he would not be laying off workers because he hopes the industry will recover again soon.

Radical measures to combat African Swine Fever have begun to meet resistance. The mayors of the 31 villages in the Pazardzhik municipality said in a joint statement that they would not allow the forced slaughter of domestic pigs...

African swine fever hits sixth pig farm in Bulgaria
                        Reuters
                        Updated: August 2, 2019

SOFIA ? Bulgaria?s veterinary authorities said on Friday they would cull 8,253 pigs after detecting an outbreak of African swine fever at a breeding farm in the northeast of the country, the sixth industrial farm in the Balkan nation to be hit by the virus.

The outbreak was detected at a farm in the village of Vetren, near the Danube town of Silistra. More than 120,000 pigs have been killed on another five farms in the past two weeks.

Experts say Bulgaria could lose its entire pig breeding industry and have its 600,000 pigs culled due to the highly contagious disease, which affects pigs but not humans.

African Swine Fever: Bulgaria confirms three new cases
Written by The Sofia Globe staff on August 8, 2019 in Bulgaria -

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said on August 8 that it had confirmed three new cases of African Swine Fever (ASF), in each case involving wild pigs that had been found dead.

One case was of two wild pigs found dead near the village of Zmenitsa in the Dospat municipality in the Smolyan district, another a wild pig found dead in Vurbnitsa in the Shoumen district and the third, a wild pig found dead near the village of Novo Gradishte in the Strazhitsa municipality in the district of Veliko Turnovo.

In all the cases, tests for ASF had proved positive at a national laboratory in Sofia.

In the cases in Shoumen and Smolyan, these were the first tests for ASF that had proved positive, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said.

Before the outbreak of ASF, Bulgaria had up to 600 000 pigs in registered farms. Confirmed cases have led to about 130 000 pigs ordered culled...

Bulgaria: A New Case of African Swine Fever in Plovdiv and Lovech

The carcass of a killed wild boar has given a positive result for the disease virus.

"A new case of African swine fever has been discovered in a wild boar found in the territory of Perushtitsa." This was announced by the director of the Regional Directorate of Forests in Plovdiv, Miroslav Dimitrov, immediately after the meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission, quoted by BTA.

A dead wild boar carcass was found on August 10, which tested positive for the ASF virus. An order was issued by the BFSA to declare a primary incident of the disease in Perushtitsa. In this regard, access to the forest territories in the infected area, covering an area of 200 square kilometers, in the lands of the hunting-economic areas of Brestovishte, Hrabrino, Krichim, Perushtitsa, Skobelevo, Ustina and Petvar is prohibited. A search of the area for dead wild pigs is forthcoming.

"Hunting is forbidden in the declared areas," Miroslav Dimitrov said...
