COVID-19 Cases Grow to 24 in South Africa, Outside of False Positive
    By Anita Powell
    March 13, 2020 10:46 AM

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's health minister on Friday announced that the nation has seen eight new cases of novel coronavirus, bringing the nation's total caseload to at least 24.

That number does not include a case reported Thursday, when South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases erroneously said the nation had seen its first locally transmitted case of novel coronavirus.

"We humbly apologize for the error in reporting the first case of local transmission of COVID-19 in our earlier report," the agency said on Twitter late Thursday. "On verification, the case was found to be negative."..

Department of Health confirms first coronavirus case in South Africa

The patient has reportedly been self-isolating since consulting a private general practitioner on March 3 for his symptoms which included fever, headache, malaise and a sore throat and cough.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday confirmed South Africa’s first case of Covid-19, commonly referred to as the coronavirus.

“The patient is a 38-year-old male who travelled to Italy with his wife. They were part of a group of 10 people and they arrived back in South Africa on March 1, 2020,” said the department in a statement.

The patient has reportedly been self-isolating since consulting a private general practitioner on March 3 for his symptoms which included fever, headache, malaise and a sore throat and cough.

First coronavirus case confirmed in South Africa

By Lou-Anne Daniels and Jonisayi Maromo 13m ago

Cape Town - The Health Department has confirmed that the first person to be diagnosed with the coronavirus in South Africa is a 38-year-old man who had travelled to Italy with his wife. The identity of the couple, who have two children, has not been made public.

According to the Health ministry, the couple, who are from KwaZulu-Natal, returned home on March 1 and the husband consulted a doctor on March 3 after presenting flu-like symptoms, including headache, fever and a cough. He tested positive for COVID-19 and has been self-isolating since then, the ministry said. The doctor has also been in isolation since March 3.

The ministry said that the Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) was tracing anyone who had come into contact with the doctor and the patient and that a tracer team was deployed to the province. An epidemiologist and NCID clinicians are included in the group.

News of the first local coronavirus case comes as the country readies to receive more than 100 citizens who are returning from China...https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-afr...frica-44181100
