A deadly type of influenza, formerly predominant in Asia, has hit Uganda, affecting a good number of people, the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) has reported.

Known as Influenza B/Yamagata, the viral disease was mainly in Southeast Asia.

But UVRI biomedical scientist John Kayiwa said they started detecting it in their laboratories in December last year although reports from Makerere University Walter Reed Project indicate it began in 2009.

Uganda has been experiencing influenza AH3N2 and A H1N12009, mostly known as swine flu as well as influenza B of the Victoria lineage. Kayiwa said Influenza B/Yamagata is currently the most common flu as opposed to influenza A.
