    1. Updates on poliomyelitis for week 48 as at November 28th, 2014

    1.1. No Wild Polio Virus (WPV) was isolated in week 48 of both 2014 and 2013.
    1.2. Between weeks 1 & 48, 2014 six (6) WPVs were isolated from 2 States compared to 51 WPVs
    isolated from 9 States at the same period in 2013 (Figure 1).

    1.3. No circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus type 2 (cVDPV2) was isolated in week 48, 2014
    compared to two (2) cVDPV2 were isolated at the same period in 2013.
    1.4. Between weeks 1 & 48, 2014 twenty-seven (27) cVDPV2 were isolated while only four (4)
    cVDPV2 was isolated at the same period in 2013 (Figure 2).
    1.5. Fifty three (53) confirmed WPV were isolated in 2013.
    1.6. As at 13th November, 2014, twenty-seven (27) polio compatible cases were reported from 27
    LGAs (15 States) (Figure 3).

    2. Update on suspected Cholera for week 48 as at 5
    th December, 2014

    2.1. Outbreaks of Cholera are on-going in some States across the country. So far in 2014, 18 States
    and the FCT have reported outbreak of Cholera between weeks 1 & 48 (Figure 5).
    2.2. In reporting week (Week 48, 2014), 28 cholera cases (Figure 6) with 15 Lab. Confirmed and
    zero (0) death were recorded from 6 LGAs (4 States) compared with 62 cases with 2 labconfirmed
    from 3 LGAs (2 States) at the same period in 2013.
    2.3. Between weeks 1 and 48 (2014), 35,874 suspected cholera cases with 305 lab-confirmed and
    753 deaths (CFR, 2.10%)
    from 180 LGAs (18 States and FCT) were reported compared with
    4390 cases with 77 lab confirmed and 151 deaths (CFR, 3.44%) from 55 LGAs (17 States and
    FCT) at the same period in 2013 (Figure 7 and 8).

    3. Lassa fever update for week 48 as at 5
    th December, 2014

    3.1 No Lassa fever case was reported in week 48, 2014 compared with 1 case with 1 labconfirmed
    and 1 death (CFR, 100%) from Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State at the same period in
    2013.
    3.2 Between weeks 1 & 48 2014, 988 Lassa fever cases with 110 lab-confirmed and 36 deaths
    (CFR, 3.64%) from 31 LGAs (13 States) were reported compared with 1192 cases with 161
    lab-confirmed and 36 deaths (CFR, 3.02%) from 27 LGAs (14 States) at the same period in
    2013 (Figure 9).

    4. Update on cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) for week 48 as at 5
    th December, 2014

    4.1 In the reporting week 48 (2014), two (2) suspected cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) cases were
    reported from Jalingo & Takum LGAs (Taraba States) compared with nine (9) suspected cases
    at the same period in 2013. Federal Ministry of Health - Nigeria
    4.2 The following LGAs reached alert/epidemic thresholds in Kebbi State in the following weeks:
    Aliero (weeks 4, 5, 12, 13, 16 and 17), Augie (weeks 12, 13 and 17) and Gwandu (weeks 12,
    16 and 17).
    4.3 Between weeks 1 & 48, 2014, 1157 CSM cases with 73 lab-confirmed and 80 deaths (CFR,
    6.91%) were recorded from 122 LGAs (26 States and FCT) compared with 849 cases with 46
    deaths (CFR, 5.42%) from 129 LGAs (27 States and FCT) at the same period in 2013 (Figure
    10).

    5. Update on suspected Measles for week 48 as at 5
    th December, 2014

    5.1 In week 48 2014, one hundred and two (102) suspected cases of measles and 0 death were
    recorded from 19 States compared with 115 suspected measles cases with 5 lab-confirmed
    cases from 21 States at the same period in 2013.
    5.2 Between weeks 1 & 48 (2014), 15,715 suspected measles cases with 85 deaths (CFR, 0.54%)
    were reported from 36 States and FCT (Figure 11) compared with 57,239 cases with 347
    deaths (CFR, 0.61%) same coverage and at the same period in 2013 (Figure 12).

    5.3 Confirmed Measles cases (lab, epi-link and clinical) between weeks 1 and 48 (2014) were
    4,487 cases (Figure 13) from 316 LGAs (Figure 14). One hundred and two (102) LGAs have
    so far reported confirmed Measles outbreak in 2014 (Figure 15).
    5.4 Most affected children are within the age group 9 - 59 months (≥2650 confirmed cases &
    62%; Figure 16 & 17 respectively).
    5.5 Vaccination status of measles cases is 64% zero dose (Figure 18).

    6. Update on Guinea worm disease: as at 31st October, 2014

    6.1 As at 31st October, 2014, no case of GWD reports was received in week 44.
    6.2 So far in 2014, 224 GWD rumour reports were received and investigated from January to
    October 2014 from 104 LGAs in 25 States. Out of these, 213 (95%) were investigated within
    24 hours. None of these rumours were confirmed to be GWD case.

    6.3 In 2013, a total of 366 GWD rumour reports were received and investigated from 188 LGAs
    (31 States), of which 342 (93.4%) were investigated within 24 hours. None of these rumours
    were confirmed to be GWD case.
    6.4 Nigeria has celebrated 5 consecutive years of zero reporting of Guinea worm disease in the
    country.

    7. Update on national Influenza sentinel surveillance, Nigeria week 1 - 44, 2014

    7.1 From week 1 - 44, a total of 946 cases were recruited of which 802 were Influenza like illness
    (ILI) and 144 Severe Acute Respiratory Infection(SARI).
    7.2 Out of 946 samples received 870 were processed. Of the processed samples, 736(84.6%) were
    ILI cases, 134(15.4%) were Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).
    7.3 Of the 736 processed ILI samples, 68(9.2%) were positive for Influenza A and 19(2.6%)
    positive for Influenza B. Of the 134 processed SARI samples, 7(5.2%) were positive for
    Influenza A while 2(1.5%) were positive for Influenza B.
    7.4 89(10.2%) of the processed 870 samples were positive for Influenza, with 69(77.5%) of these
    were positive for Influenza A and 20(22.5%) positive for Influenza B. The subtypes A (2009)
    H1N1, seasonal H3, seasonal H1and A/H5 account for 24 (34.8%), 23 (33.3%), 0(0.0%) and 0
    (0.0%) of the total influenza A positive samples respectively. A/not sub typed and Un-sub
    typeable account for 22 (31.9%), 0(0.0%) of the total positive influenza A samples
    respectively.
    7.5 The percentage influenza positive was highest (45.0%) in week 14.
    7.6 In the reporting week 44, 39 sample received but are yet to be processed.

    After a year where the Government MOH website has not published any epidemiological reports - I finally came across an alternate source - https://wca.humanitarianresponse.inf.../locations/142

    Cholera Situation in Nigeria

    ?Cumulatively from week 01 to week 24, 23,324 cholera cases
    (128 Lab-confirmed) including 301 deaths (CFR 1.3%) were
    reported from 109 LGAs in 18 States.
    Whereas 11 cholera
    cases 1 death were reported from 5 LGAs (3 states) within the
    same period (Wk1-24) in 2013.
    ?In the reporting week (week 24), 434 cholera cases including 7
    deaths were reported by 24 LGAs from 6 States (Adamawa,
    Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano and Zamfara). Four States
    (Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano and Zamfara) accounted for about
    92% (398/434) of the cholera cases reported in wk 24.
