Summary
Between weeks 1 ? 44 2011, a total of 22,686 cases of Cholera with 728 deaths,
CFR 3.2% while for Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), a total of 1029 cases and 59
deaths with CFR of 6.0% have also been reported. A total of 27,099 suspected
measles cases and 184 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of this year.
So far in 2011, a total of 923 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 66 laboratoryconfirmed
cases and 40 deaths with CFR of 4.3% have been reported. Nigeria has
recorded 41 wild polio virus (WPV) cases in 8 States in 2011 with 21 vaccine
derived polio virus (cVDPV2) in 6 States while no case of Guinea worm disease has
been recorded in 2011.

In the reporting week 44 ( 31ST October ? 6th November
2011), 41 cases, 3 deaths and CFR 7.3% were
reported from 6 LGAs in 2 States (Table 1)

Poliomyelitis
As at November 4 2011, 41 cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) had been recorded in 8 States,
(namely Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Zamfara and Katsina) compared to 14
cases in 7 States for the same period in 2010. (Figure 3 and Table 2).
The total number of circulating vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV2) is 21 in 6 States as at 4th
November 2011 compared to 22 cases in 8 States for the same period in 2010 (Figure 4).

Cerebrospinal Meningitis
In the reporting week 44 2011, 5 cases were
reported from 3 LGAs in 3 States with 0 death (Table 3).

In the reporting week 44, 24 suspected cases of measles with no death were recorded from 10
States

In the reporting wk 44, 21 suspected cases of Lassa fever were reported with 1 laboratory confirmed
and 1 death.

7.0. Update on National Influenza Sentinel Surveillance (NISS), Nigeria, Week 1 - 43, 2011.
7.1. From wk 1 ? 43, a total of 2195 cases were recruited of which 1740 were Influenza like illness (ILI), 447
Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and 8 non-ILI non-SARI cases.
7.2. As at week 41, 166 samples (7.6%) tested positive, out of which 92 (55.4%) were influenza A and 74
(44.6%) influenza B. The subtypes A (2009) H1N1, seasonal H3, seasonal H1 and A/H5 account for 43
(46.7%), 37(40.2%), 1 (1.1%) and 1 (1.1%) of the total influenza A positive samples respectively. A/ not
subtype account for 10 (10.9%) of the total positive samples. The percentage influenza positive was highest
(56.0%) in week 39
7.3. In the reporting week 43, 43 cases were recruited, but the latest laboratory results (week 41) shows that out of
11samples processed, 2(18.2%) tested positive for influenza B.
