    Summary

    Between weeks 1 ? 26 2011, a total of 10,510 cases of Cholera with 277 deaths, CFR 2.64% while for Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), a total of 780 cases and 45 deaths with CFR of 5.7% have also been reported. A total of 24,986 of suspected measles cases and 180 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of this year.
    So far in 2011, a total of 531 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 50 laboratory confirmed cases and 26 deaths with CFR of 4.9% have been reported. Nigeria has recorded 16 wild polio virus (WPV) cases in 6 States in 2011 with 10 vaccine derived polio virus (cVDPV2) in 6 States while no case of Guinea worm disease has been recorded in 2011.

    Update on National Influenza Sentinel Surveillance (NISS), Nigeria, Week 1 - 24, 2011.
    7.1. From wk 1 ? 25, a total of 1148 cases were recruited of which 907 were Influenza like illness (ILI), 233 Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and 8 non-ILI non-SARI cases.
    As at week 24, 70 samples (7.0%) tested positive, out of which 29 (41.4%) were influenza A and 41 (58.6%) influenza B. The subtypes A (2009) H1N1 and seasonal H3 account for 19 (65.5%)
    and 4(13.8%) of the total influenza A positive samples respectively.
    The percentage influenza positive was highest (38.2%) in week 9
    7.2. In the reporting week 25, 74 cases were recruited. Laboratory results are pending.

    CFR 2.5% while for Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), a total of 814 cases and 45
    deaths with CFR of 5.5% have also been reported. A total of 25,482 of suspected
    measles cases and 180 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of this year.
    So far in 2011, a total of 584 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 53 laboratory confirmed
    cases and 28 deaths with CFR of 4.79% have been reported. Nigeria has
    recorded 20 wild polio virus (WPV) cases in 6 States in 2011 with 11 vaccine
    derived polio virus (cVDPV2) in 6 States while no case of Guinea worm disease has

    7.1.From wk 1 – 27, a total of 1265 cases were recruited of which 992 were Influenza like illness (ILI), 265
    Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and 8 non‐ILI non‐SARI cases.
    As at week 24, 70 samples (7.0%) tested positive, out of which 29 (41.4%) were influenza A and 41
    (58.6%) influenza B. The subtypes A (2009) H1N1 and seasonal H3 account for 19 (65.5%) and 4(13.8%)
    of the total influenza A positive samples respectively.

      deaths with CFR of 5.9% have also been reported. A total of 25,643 of suspected
      measles cases and 182 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of this year.
      So far in 2011, a total of 616 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 53 laboratory confirmed
      cases and 29 deaths with CFR of 4.71% have been reported. Nigeria has
      recorded 23 wild polio virus (WPV) cases in 6 States in 2011 with 12 vaccine

          On the 11th August 2011, the Borno State Epidemiologist reported an outbreak of suspected cases of
          Mumps in Biu LGA. 13 deaths had been recorded since the 13th April 2011 but could not be verified. As
          at 10th August 2011, 16 suspected cases were currently on admission at the General Hospital, Biu
          receiving treatment and are said to be responding to treatment.

          8.1. From wk 1 ? 30, a total of 1510 cases were recruited of which 1176 were Influenza like illness (ILI),
          326 Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and 8 non-ILI non-SARI cases.
          8.2. As at week 28, 79 samples (5.9%) tested positive, out of which 33 (41.8%) were influenza A and 46
          (58.2%) influenza B. The subtypes A (2009) H1N1 and seasonal H3 account for 21 (63.6%) and 5(15.2%)
          of the total influenza A positive samples respectively. The percentage influenza positive was highest

            Weekly Updates on Epidemics in Nigeria: as at 19th Aug 2011
            Tuesday, 23 August 2011 08:25 .Federal Ministry of Health Weekly Epidemiology Report indicates that between weeks 1 ?32 2011, a total of 13,551 cases of Cholera with 353 deaths, CFR 2.6% while for Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), a total of 886 cases and 53 deaths with CFR of 5.98%have also been reported.

            A total of 26,200 of suspected measles cases and 183 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of this year.

            So far in 2011, a total of 687 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 56 laboratory- confirmed cases and 33 deaths with CFR of 4.8% have been reported. Nigeria has recorded 25 wild polio virus (WPV) cases in 6 States in 2011 with 14 vaccine derived polio virus (cVDPV2)in 6 States while no case of Guinea worm disease has been recorded in 2011.
