Rains leading to increases in malaria and other communicable diseases
The onset of the Long Rains is contributing to an increasing trend of malaria and other
communicable diseases across the country, according to the World Health Organization.
The measles outbreak continues, with over 850 cases reported from 68 districts across
the country; in the past week alone, 221 new cases were reported from 43 districts (with
no deaths). A national immunization campaign is being planned within the next three
months. Meanwhile, there were 135,700 cases of malaria with 8 deaths reported. Two
cases of acute flaccid paralysis were reported in Manga and Kimilili Bungoma districts,
with no reported deaths. The cases were investigated and tested negative for polio virus.
No cholera cases were reported.
