  • Ghana: Merton Int. School shuts down over swine flu scare

Authorities of Merton International School have closed down the school temporarily after it was detected that five children had become infected with the H1N1 strain or swine flu.

Joy News sources at the school say parents were given letters indicating that the school authorities had decided to shut down the school to contain the situation and prevent further infections.

Parents were informed about the situation last Friday.

This latest outbreak of the H1N1 strain comes on the heels of another Accra based school where some students were found to be exhibiting symptoms of the disease.

The disease appears not to be completely wiped out although very little is heard about it in recent times.

Health officials however say the situation is being carefully managed.

Authorities of the Merton International School say the Nursery Division is not affected by the closure of the school following the detection of swine flu.

Officials say the unit is open and classes have not been disrupted.

The Primary and High School divisions located at Ridge here in Accra however remain shut after five children were found to have contracted the H1N1 strain of the swine flu virus.

Parents with wards at the school were handed letters last Friday communicating the shutdown.

The closure of Merton follows the temporary closure of Lincoln International School at Dzorwulu following the detection of H1N1 infections.

Experts say the latest case is an indication the virus is still prevalent even though it appears very little is heard of it in recent times. Health officials however tell Joy News the situation is being carefully managed.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
