Symptoms of dry beriberi include: difficulty walking, loss of sensation in hands and feet, loss of muscle function or paralysis of the lower limbs, tingling and vomiting. This epidemic could be explained by the difficulties involved for Abidjan to eat properly during the post-election crisis that lasted several weeks. Other people also refer to the proposition that all victims are former prisoners released over the socio-political unrest. According to specialists, the treatment of this disease is through the administration of thiamine hydrochloride orally or parenterally. The consumption of grains, unrefined generally helps improve the level of thiamine in the blood. Meat, eggs, fish, leafy green vegetables, fresh fruit, milk and dairy products are also recommended for the treatment of beriberi. Samples were carried out to determine the exact pathology that plagues the town martyrdom. Asked yesterday about the matter, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Dr. Allah-Kouadio Remi said that investigations were underway.

                  "History and causes of beriberi

Beriberi is caused by a deficiency of thiamine, or Vitamin B1. It was described in Chinese literature as early as 2600 B.C. The disease has always been prevalent in Asian countries, and doctors puzzled over it for years, thinking it was because of a substance in white rice.

Finally in 1934 they got down to the truth when the vitamin B1, thiamine, was identified. Beriberi was actually a result of something missing from rice which has been milled or polished. The thiamine is in the outer layer of the rice which was being polished away. To aggravative the condition, many of the foods eaten in this part of the world, such as raw fish and tea, contain anti-thiamine factor, which can deactivate thiamine so your body is not able to use it."

To restore some of the nutrients, many U.S. rice mills routinely "enrich" the processed rice by adding back nutrients. The problem for Haitians, however, is that the nutrients are returned by merely coating the exterior of the rice grain with the mixture. Haitians, Griffin and Morgan would learn, have always scrubbed their rice before cooking it -- which, according to Griffin, at the prison resulted in a meal "that had about as much nutritional value as cardboard.''...
