OVERVIEW OF THE SITUATION
● Extension of the major measles epidemic in the DRC since the beginning of 2012. According to figures provided by the Directorate for the Fight against Disease (MLD) of the Ministry of Public Health and WHO, 5,951 cases with 127 deaths (CFR 2.1%) were reported from week 1 to Week 7 in the 11 provinces of the DRC. East Kasai (2243 cases including 51 deaths), Katanga (965 cases with 17 deaths), Eastern Province (761 cases with 11 deaths), Ecuador (649 cases with 9 deaths) and Bandundu (591 cases with 27 deaths) were among the regions most affected by the epidemic. In 2011, the country had notified a total of 134,041 e cases with 1,652 deaths;
● Cholera: downward trend of cases in the area of health Muanda (resort town of Bas-Congo): 18 cases with 1 death were notified during the eighth epidemiological week, bringing the cumulative total of 4 weeks at week 8 to 169 cases including 6 deaths (CFR 3.55%). City-Province of Kinshasa is still experiencing persistent cases, with a cumulative total of 233 cases and 8 deaths (CFR 3.43%) from week 1 to week 8.
● Polio: the beginning of this February 28, 2012 Local Immunization Days (JLV) response in 36 health zones targeted the four provinces of eastern DRC. These are among others: 19 health zones in Katanga (Kalemie antenna with 11 and ZS-Dianda Kabondo antenna with 8 ZS), ZS 9 Maniema (antenna Kasongo), 4 ZS Kasai Oriental (antenna Kabinda), 4 ZS South Kivu (Uvira antenna). The western part of the country will vaccinate 2 to 4 March 2012 the four targeted ZS Bas-Congo (antenna Mbanza Ngungu), in synchronization with Angola that takes his campaign to the above period. Total cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) from January to December 31, 2011: 93 cases of type 1. New cases this week: 0; new health zone affected: 0. Areas with PVS in 2011 in the DRC: 38 against 31 in 2010. Date of onset of paralysis of most recent case: 20 December 2011. Date of final passage of supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) in the area of the latter: January 31, 2012. WHO, UNICEF and other partners provide technical support to these financial and AVS.
