Re: Democratic Republic of the Congo: Weekly Report

Epidemics in DRC: More than 125 cases of measles and more than 100 new cholera cases recorded
          every day in the DRC.

? Since the beginning of the year until the first week of May 2012, 15,841 cases of measles, 268
          deaths were recorded
in 28 health zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according
the World Health Organization (WHO). The UN agency and partners of the health sector
currently preparing an emergency response plan in the new areas of health and epidemic
call for increased support in health facilities. They also call for
participation of the Congolese Government to 50% financing operations. In 2011, measles
had reached over 134,000 people and caused over 1,650 deaths in all provinces.

? On May 11, 2012, the DRC had registered since the beginning of the year 13,994 cases of cholera with 313 deaths,
according to statistics compiled by the WHO and the Ministry of Health. This represents an average
106 new cases each day with 2.3 deaths. This figure also corresponds to 64.5% of all
cases reported in 2011. The District of Ituri, in Orientale Province, which had reported 205 cases in
2011 is now the area most affected with 2,864 cases including 90 deaths since the beginning of the year. the
South Kivu province ranks second with 2,705 cases including 16 deaths.
The trend of cholera is declining in areas where interventions are underway, but new
areas of health - so far unaffected - are beginning to report cases. What makes it difficult to fight
          against disease.

                Bulletin d'Information Humanitaire

                17 ao?t 2012 Province de l?Equateur N? 32/12

                ...
                Cholera Response
? From 30 July to 05 August (Epidemiological week 31), 44 new cholera cases with one death were reported in the Province of Equateur. This brings the number of cases in 2480, including 132 deaths since the beginning of 2012, in 28 health zones, with a mortality rate of 5.3%. The Health Zone Makanza alone has recorded 14 cases including one death, while the NGO Alima just disengage from the ZS, but continues to operate again until mid-September in the ZS Binga. The recent withdrawal of Alima Makanza is considered premature by the partners as the area of health, which Alima left the management of cholera treatment unit (CTU), has not the ability to manage this structure. On the ground, the situation may worsen with'' the rainy season, expected in September and the concentration of the population in camps and islands, where access is almost impossible. The Sacred Life NGOs that received funding from FRA has not yet started activities on the ground. At present, the priority is to intensify prevention activities in the ZS and provide additional funding to Alima for business continuity. The side of the Sanitary District of Mbandaka, the population is struggling to supply drinking water, since almost all water wells have dried up in the dry season. The few remaining wells are too, polluted. Ideally, humanitarian think, would be to provide Regideso / Mbandaka water treatment products. Overall, I must say that the actions of humanitarian field helped stabilize and reduce cases and deaths from cholera in Ecuador. However, the needs in terms of support and community awareness are still enormous.

                Health
                Warning:
? The Bwamanda ZS (South Ubangi DS) has reported suspected cases of meningitis since the beginning of 2012 (149 cases, including 50 deaths from week 1 to 31). For its part, the ZS Bosobolo also continues to report cases. July 30, 26 cases including 3 deaths were recorded. According to M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF), the situation of the ZS Bosobolo must be closely monitored because it is in this that is concentrated near ZS 1800 CAR refugees since late May 2012. MSF plans to conduct a campaign response, hearing samples samples sent to the National Institute for Biological Research (IRNB), Kinshasa. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Provincial Health Division has taken steps to provide the province reagent kits for the first tests.

? The Province of Ecuador is currently facing a measles epidemic that is spreading on several health zones. Four Districts (Ecuador, Mongala South Ubangi and Tshuapa) of the five that the province has confirmed this epidemic. In ZS Yalifafu (DS of Tshuapa), five samples sent to the INRB are declared positive. An MSF team is part of an assessment mission
on site with some kits support measles, to initiate the response in
Pending the results of the assessment for a comprehensive response. The epidemic is also confirmed in many others such as ZS Bumba (58 cases), Ikela (13 cases) and Budjala (12 cases). Assessments humanitarian field are ongoing and may lead to response actions with the local support case. The WHO has recommended that local teams have just completed a epidemiological surveillance training to organize to strengthen routine immunization of functional committees to control and organize centers support cases and to the state needs care kits. Preparations for immunization response quality are course, according to WHO.

? 20 cases of Monkey Pox whose death was also reported in epidemiological week 31 in Equateur. Area Health Basankusu (DS Equateur) notified to herself eight cases including two deaths. This bringing the total to 727 cases including 15 deaths have occurred since the beginning of 2012. The ZS most affected are Ndage (107 cases / 1 death), Yambuku (106 cases / 0 deaths) Djolu (70 cases / 0 deaths) and Iboko (57 cases / 1 death).

Epidemiological week of the 37th to the 43rd, the health zone of Moba to 92 reported cholera cases including 1 death. UNICEF and WHO have quickly established a humanitarian response. MONUSCO helped carry urgently first batch (120 liters) of Ringer Lactate from UNICEF on Moba. Amount that was quickly consumed. UNICEF has made available chlorine and 560 liters of Ringer's lactate and 25 cartons of ORS 1000 (ie a total of 25,000 bags). WHO has provided transportation of these inputs on Moba.

Humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Briefing to the press, Jan. 30, 2013

For a five-year fight against the cholera epidemic has killed more than 52 000 cases in two years

More than 52,400 cases of cholera 1293 deaths were reported in nine of the eleven provinces of
DRC past two years, according to experts in the fight against cholera, which met the
January 23 and 24 under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health.
                              In
2012, 30 753 cases of cholera with 709 deaths have been registered against 21 700 in 2011, including 584 deaths.
According to experts, the cholera response has been more effective in epidemic areas of western
where there has been the decline in cases and mortality. In endemic areas the epidemic is
by cons, the number of cases has increased by more than 68%, from about 14,000 in 2011 to 23,578 in
, 2012. This increase is the result of the outbreak in Ituri - ranging from 639 to 5024 a
year to the next - and the deteriorating security conditions in endemic areas.
For better control of the epidemic and improve the response to cholera in the years come, the workshop recommended, among other things, strengthening the in-hospital hygiene, flexibility
funding, strengthening the epidemiological surveillance and communication system, the
creation of an emergency fund cholera and systematic funding contingency plans
provincial and standardization of cholera treatment centers.
Participants emphasized the importance of recognizing the cholera as a major health risk
public and the need to develop long-term solutions. And a five year plan 2013 -
2018 for the elimination of cholera is being developed to mobilize more funding
development, especially in endemic areas of the east, where insecurity is a major challenge in
                              battle.
Past two years, only the two Kasai provinces have been affected by the epidemic
cholera. Limited access to safe drinking water, especially in rural areas, gaps in practice
hygiene and dysfunction of the health system are among the major causes of
Persistence of cholera in the country.

Measles persists in Eastern Province with 400 cases including 10 deaths in a week
After a period of relative calm, the Bas-Uele districts and Tshopo recorded

In 2012, the DRC has reported about 73,794 cases of measles with 2023 deaths. The disease occurs in
several Congolese provinces, particularly in the eastern part where insecurity linked to conflict
armed not allow the normal vaccination campaigns.
                              In response to last
